The FBI Director signs on the front free endpaper, ''To Bea & Warren Matthew / Best wishes / J. Edgar Hoover / 12.25.60''. At this time in the early 1960s, Hoover's secret counter intelligence program had been implemented to weed out perceived communist infiltration. Measures 5.75'' x 8.5''. Some dampstaining most prominent to rear board, and some foxing and discoloration. Very good condition.

            J. Edgar Hoover Signed Typed Letter on FBI Letter Head in Framed Presentation W/PSA DNA Authentication - This typed letter is printed on Federal Bureau of Investigation letter head, and was sent by FBI director John Edgar Hoover to advise the recipient of a promotion and pay raise. The letter is dated July 8, 1937, and has been signed by Hoover in blue ink at the conclusion. The letter is framed in a wonderful presentation, along with a photograph of Hoover and a copies of the U.S. Department of Justice Identification Order for the notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. Inside the presentation is also a copy of the Identification Order for John Dillinger which includes the criminal's fingerprints, as Hoover is credited with instituting a number of modernizations to police technology, including a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories. The signed letter has been authenticated by PSA DNA, and the piece will be accompanied by a copy of the letter of authenticity affixed to the back of the frame. Please note: the letter of authenticity encompasses a collection of assorted typed letters signed by Hoover in which this document was part of, and references certification numbers B16226-B16237. Measurements: 16" x 36".

I.S.P., 9 1/4" x 11 1/4", reproducing an engraving showing a chest-up view of Hoover. The FBI director signs at lower left in blue ink, adding a dedication to FBI employee Stella M. Rynell, with the date "6.28.44". Shows minor creases, else very good. Also present is a printed document, 9 1/2" x 13", an FBI "War Service Certificate" awarded to Rynell for her work handling "...counterespionage, countersabotage, and other internal security and national defense investigations..." during World War II. The certificate bears Hoover's facsimile signature at the conclusion. Very good. Two pieces.

Hoover thanks his correspondent for his kind remarks on an address Hoover made on receiving an award, and states that he cannot further assist him: "...the FBI being an investigative agency of the Federal Government neither makes evaluations nor draws conclusions as to the character or integrity of an organization, individual or publication..." The subject of this cryptic statement is not made clear. Hoover signs at the conclusion in blue ink. Shows original mailing folds, else very good. Also present is a printed document, 8pp. 4to., the text of the above-mentioned address given by Hoover on Dec. 7, 1961, entitled "The Faith to be Free", as well as five contemporary issues of the conservative newsletter "Human Events", with other related ephemera.

            J. Edgar Hoover (Jan. 1, 1895 - May 2, 1972) joined the Justice Department in 1917 and was named Director of the Departments Bureau of Investigation in 1924. When the Bureau (reorganized by Hoover as the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935), Hoover instituted strenuous agent-recruiting and advanced intelligence-gathering techniques. During his tenure he confronted gangsters, Nazis and Communists, some very Notorious bringing the FBI enormous popularity. Later, Hoover ordered illegal surveillance against suspected enemies of the state and political opponents. Despite receiving harsh criticism from the public, Hoover remained Director of the FBI until his death on May 2, 1972. Rare original index card signature.
