Beale, M. (1632-1699) (attrib). (Portrait of Gerard Edema (±1652-1700), landscape painter). Drawing, 13,7x11,5 cm. (leaf), brush and ink, heightened with white, laid down on mount. = Attribution and identification of the sitter on (18th/ 19th cent.) mount: "MBeal p." [MB in legature] and "Gerrard Edema Landskip painter". This portrait is mentioned by Christiaan Kramm: "EDEMA (Gerard) is reeds bij Immerzeel vermeld. 1, p.413). Gerard Edema studied with Allart van Everdingen and moved to London around 1670. Here he made name as painter of (exotic) landscapes. He died at Richmond of alcoholism in 1700. J.C. Weyerman describes him as "Een van de schoonste Manspersoonen in zyn Eeuw", but as far as we have been able to trace, no other portraits are kown (a very small portrait of Edema, based on the current drawing, appears together with that of Gerard Soest and Jan Griffier on an illustration by A. Bannerman in H. Walpole, Anecdotes of painting in England, 1762). Alltogether a remarkable portrait, drawn by an artist who has been described as Britain´s first professional female painter. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXIX.
