    Signed and dated lower left: L. Eckhardt né à Hamburg 1789Georg Ludwig Eckhardt was born in Hamburg in 1770. As the son of an art dealer, he came into contact with works of art and literature early on. His artistic talent attracted considerable interest in his home town, and his portraits and landscapes were highly sought-after. However, he was sickly throughout his life and passed away aged just 25. This moonlit harbour scene displays the influence of French art and was painted when the artist was 18 years old. Eckhard was not only a painter, but also authored literature on art.

    HAFENLANDSCHAFT BEI MONDSCHEIN Öl auf Leinwand. 63 x 28 cm. Links unten signiert und datiert "Hamburg 1789". Blick vom Ufer über die Bucht eines Hafens mit am Ufer stehenden Wehrbauten. Am rechten Bildrand als Repoussoir ein hoher Rundturm mit anschließendem Giebelgebäude, davor der Rumpf eines barocken, großen Handelsschiffes. Am Ufer links vorne zahlreiche Figurenstaffage in Gestalt von Fischern, die ihre Körbe an Land tragen sowie Fischerfrauen und weitere Personen. Im Hintergrund ein Dreimaster vor Anker, der hohe Wolkenhimmel diesig wiedergegeben mit aufgehendem Mond im Nebellicht. Gutachten: Dem Gemälde ist eine Expertise von Raffaella Colace, Cremona, vom 13.3.2008 beigegeben mit entsprechenden Vergleichsverweisen auf Werken des genannten Malers, der als Schüler von Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789) die Maltradition fortgesetzt hat.
