  • LOVELY DAY FOR A GUINNESS - GARDENER ORIGINAL VINTAGE POSTER BY TOM ECKERSLEY

LOVELY DAY FOR A GUINNESS - GARDENER ORIGINAL VINTAGE POSTER BY TOM ECKERSLEY

    Est: $1,700 - $2,200

The Guinness Company were noted for the various advertising slogans ( Guinness for Strength , My Goodness My Guinness) and here we see their well-known Lovely Day for a Guinness slogan as interpreted by Tom Eckersley. The gardener is trimming the hedge to resemble a seal which was part of earlier Guinness ads. The whimsy and humor for which Guinness ads were famous persists in this charming image. St. James's Gate Brewery is a brewery founded in 1759 in Dublin, Ireland, by Arthur Guinness. The company is now a part of Diageo, a British company formed from the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan in 1997. The main product of the brewery is Guinness Draught. Originally leased in 1759 to Arthur Guinness at IR£45 (Irish pounds) per year for 9,000 years, St. James' Gate has been the home of Guinness ever since. It became the largest brewery in Ireland in 1838, and the largest in the world by 1886, with an annual output of 1.2 million barrels. Although no longer the largest brewery in the world, it is still the largest brewer of stout in the world. The company has since bought out the originally leased property, and during the 19th and early 20th centuries the brewery owned most of the buildings in the surrounding area, including many streets of housing for brewery employees, and offices associated with the brewery. Tom Eckersley (1914-1995) was one of the foremost graphic designers of the twentieth century working in the UK. His works employ minimal text, instead transmitting their message by pared-down graphic elements and bold blocks of color. Eckersley's career spanned from the 1930s until the 1990s, during which time he worked for a huge range of employees from London Transport, Gillette and Guinness to Crisis, World Wide Fund for Nature and the Inner London Education Authority. Eckersley was also a teacher and established the first graphic design course in the UK at what was then called the London College of Printing (now London College of Communication). The charm in many of Eckersley's works is their ability to convey a strong message through a simple design. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

'WHISKY GALORE!' (1949) POSTER, BRITISH  | Tom Eckersley (1914-1997)

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

This Ealing comedy was the directorial debut of Alexander Mackendrick.  The film stars Basil Radford, Bruce Seton, Joan Greenwood and Gordon Jackson. The film's screenplay was written by Compton MacKenzie, who also wrote the novel of the same name.  The story is based on true events, about Scottish islanders who have run out of whiskey, and who find a shipwreck laden with a huge amount of whiskey !  The studio was working at full pace, having already released Passport to Pimlico earlier in the same year. This is the rarest size British poster produced on this title.  Printed in two sheets, it was designed to hang on the back of a door in the theatre.
