He was a member of the Royal Board of Trustees of the Prado Museum, appointed in 1970. He began his training at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando between 1944 and 1950. He furthered his studies at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Gráficas and at the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográficas. In 1955 he obtained a grant for the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, and remained in Italy until 1959. He taught at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, winning the chair of Drawing from Life by competitive examination. In 1963 he was appointed secretary of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he remained until 1966. In 1978 he became a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he subsequently became dean. As an artist, he was a notable illustrator of bullfighting posters. Throughout his artistic career he received numerous prizes: in 1951 he was awarded the National Painting Prize, and in 1953 he won the National Engraving Prize and the first medal for engraving at the National Exhibition for Plaza de Oriente. In 1957 he was awarded the gold medal of the Association of Engraving Artists. In 1970 he won the grand prize at the 8th Alexandria Art Biennial and the following year he was awarded the National Painting Prize.

    Francisco Echauz (1927-2011) Spain, Oil on Canvas. Large Surrealist oil of figures entering the Trojan Horse of Ancient Mythology. Signed and dated 1952. It was painted early in Echauz's career at the age of 25, after his studies at the Fine Arts School in Madrid. He had already won the National prize for painting in 1951. In the 1960's Francisco's work evolved into expressionism and then to abstraction. He exhibited extensively and won many awards. Condition: painting has an early relining, see photo #4.
