    LEVI ECHALOOK (1918-1975), INUKJUAK

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Kneeling caribou, ca. 1958, mottled black stone and antler, signed in syllabics and with disc no. E9-864, 5.25 x 6 x 5 in, 13.5 x 15.5 x 12.5 cm Provenance: John and Mary Robertson Collection Exhibited and illustrated in Jean Blodgett, "Selections from the John and Mary Robertson Collection of Inuit Sculpture," Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen's University 1986 (cat. #32). It is possible that this sculpture was made earlier in the decade, circa 1952-53-perhaps influenced by a drawing in James Houston's 1951 booklet "Sanajaqsaq: Eskimo Handicrafts." For very similar works, see Sarollie Weetaluktuk's 1953 "Caribou" (Darlene Wight: "Early Masters" p. 69) and Amidlak's "Caribou" (in Houston's 1954 "Canadian Eskimo Art").
