Oil Painting „View of Hamburg“ by W.J. Eberhardt 1942

    Est: €1 - €210

Oil on canvas Wilhelm Julius Eberhardt (1875-1943/46) - German painter and draughtsman Hand-signed, dated and titled ‚W. Eberhardt 42 Hmbg.‘ Framed Dimensions framed: 58,5 x 43cm Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 210 EUR Wilhelm Julius Eberhardt is a painter from Hamburg who is mainly known for his atmospheric oil paintings with views of the city and the harbour of Hamburg. His paintings show the residents of the city in all sorts of daily work and life situations, shopping, fishing or strolling. This beautiful painting is no exception: mother and son run errands, a boy drags a heavy chariot, a delivery boy guides his horse carriage carefully through the gate. All these small scenes fill the picture with life. The sky and the deep green trees, painted with strong brush strokes, add to the impression of a lively town. The oil painting on canvas (mounted on strong cardboard) is in good condition with small stains and tears, the frame shows colour flaking. The size of the cardboard is 51,5 x 36,5 cm. Wilhelm Julius Eberhardt (1875-1943) Born in Hamburg, the artist initially trained as a decorative painter. He subsequently studied at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts as well as at the educational institution of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin as a student of Max Seliger. From 1900 onwards, he worked on the facade paintings of the German pavilion for the World Exhibition in Paris under the leadership of Richard Boehland. Then Eberhardt worked in a studio for decorative painting in Berlin for two years, during this period he predominately created religious art. In addition to this, he copied the old masters, which were exhibited in the Berlin museums. In 1904 he settled in Hamburg as a freelance painter and draughtsman for interior decorations. Until 1909 he was involved in the mural paintings of the banqueting hall of Hamburg’s city hall, which were instructed by Hugo Vogel; for this Eberhardt received as an award a coin from the 16th century by the Hamburg Senate. Eberhardt is primarily known for his interior decorations, landscapes and drawings; his works can for example be seen today at the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
