The portrait of her daughter was painted around ten years later. He became a fashionable artist, particularly known for painting children and was patronised by the aristocracy and the Royal Family.

    REGINALD EASTON (1807-1893)

    Est: £400 - £600

REGINALD EASTON (1807-1893) Portrait miniature of Master Theophilius Hastings, wearing green velvet jacket, white shirt and black neck tie, c.1860 Watercolour on ivory Later gilt-metal frame with velvet backing Oval, 2.4in (60mm) high Provenance: European Private Collection Footnote: Although it has not been possible to fully identify this young boy, he is likely related to the Earls of Huntingdon, as both his surname and his forename are common within the lineage of the Earls. His namesake could be Theophilus Hastings, 7th Earl of Huntingdon (1650–1701) who remained loyal to James II after the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when the Catholic King was deposed for the Protestant William of Orange and Mary II. Reginald Easton was well-known for his highly successful portraits of children and gained many commissions from aristocratic patrons. Easton began work as an engraver but later took up watercolour and miniature painting. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy from 1835 until 1887, from addresses in London although he was resident, c.1850, at Leamington, Warwickshire. His work is well-represented in the Royal Collection as he was well acquainted with Queen Victoria and her extended family during the later 1860s. The portrait of Princess Irene of Hesse (1866-1953) [RCIN 420511], for example, was painted in 1868 at Osborne House, the Queen’s residence on the Isle of Wight. This portrait of a young boy is typical of Easton’s work, employing bright, clear colours and a dramatic sky backdrop.
