Mary Alexandra Bell Eastlake, Canadian 1864-1951 -  A Cornish Village;  oil on canvas, 41.5 x 51 cm Note: titled to exhibition label on the reverse. Artist's label on the reverse reads 'Hollywood Croydon', Exhibited: The Royal Institute of Painters, London (according to the label attached to the reverse) Note: Eastlake moved to St Ives from Canada in 1893 where she met her husband and fellow painter Charles Herbert Eastlake, RBA (British 1868-1927). She would remain in the UK until 1939. In 1911 they maintained a studio in Chelsea and later in Croydon. She exhibited at the Royal Academy, Arts and Crafts, and New English Art Club, and around Canada and the United States. Her works are in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. She only occasionally signed, and almost never dated, her canvases.

Note: Canadian artist Mary Alexandra Bell Eastlake was best known for her portraits of women and children as well as her jewelry designs. She studied with Robert Harris at the Art Association of Montreal, under William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League of New York, and at the Académie Julian in Paris. She exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1889 and 1906 and was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1893. After meeting Charles Herbert Eastlake, an English painter and director of the Chelsea Polytechnic, and marrying him in 1897, Eastlake moved to England and devoted time to learning enamel and metal work to produce jewelry as an applied art. She returned to Canada following the death of her husband in 1939. In addition to the Salon, Eastlake exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club and throughout the United States and Canada.

Mary Alexandra Eastlake was born in Douglas, Ontario in 1864, and studied in Montreal with Robert Harris, at the Art Students League in New York with William Chase, and at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. She travelled to England and settled in St. Ives where she met and married the English painter H. Eastlake. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy, as well as the Pastel Society of London, the Women's International Art Club and the Boston Water-colour Society.
