Stow on the Wold, oil on board, painted monogram lower left, label to frame verso with title, artist and address in ink, also with 'AE' monogram printed in red, board size 16.3 x 24 cm (6 1/2 x 9 1/2 ins), in a gilt wood frame with artist's name plate to lower portion (32 x 39.5 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: Sir Alfred East painted in the Cotswolds working from his studio in Upper Swell near Stow on the Wold. Born in Kettering, Northamptonshire he first worked for the family shoe-making business, later studying at the Glasgow School of Art and becoming a professional landscape artist in his late thirties. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1899, having been a regular exhibitor since 1883 and elected to full membership in 1913. He was also president of the Royal Society of British Artists, a position he held until his death in September 1913.

He studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He then went to France to further his education with Tony Robert-Fleury and William Adolphe Bouguereau at the renowned École des Beaux-Arts. His romantic landscapes show an influence of the Barbizon school. In 1906 Alfred East was elected President of the Royal Academy of Arts. On July 7, 1910, East was created a Knight Bachelor by King Edward VII. Our picture shows a walk on a rural avenue under a dramatic skye. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographs 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. Walker, 1 Park Crescent, Wolverhampton in 1918. Private Collection, UK. By descent. Note: East worked almost exclusively in the genre of landscape painting. He was a central member of the 19th-century artistic scene, exhibiting with Thomas Cooper Gotch (1854-1931) and W. Ayerst Ingram (1855-1913). He also served as the President of the Royal Society of British Artists from 1906 until his death. This evocative vista, consisting of a romantic ruined castle undisturbed by human presence, exhibits his skill as a watercolourist, with the muted blue and greens of the trees suggesting a hazy early morning light. Many of East's landscapes display the influence of the Barbizon School of late 19th-century France, spearheaded by figures such as Theodore Rousseau (1812-1867) and Charles-Francois Daubigny (1817-1878).
