Bob Dylan Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1941 -

“His brushstrokes are like his voice: straightforward, rough, occasionally fragile. He's not after artistic perfection but something larger, a moment, a feeling. The effect is enthralling.”

He’s celebrated across the globe for his revolutionary music, with the Independent newspaper naming him ‘the most important figure in pop-culture history’ in 2011. But it isn’t just songs like ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ and ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ that have made Bob Dylan one of the world’s most influential people; his foray into fine art continues to take centre stage.

Upon their first release in the Drawn Blank book in 1994, Dylan’s sketches wowed critics and viewers alike with their confident hand and raw honesty. Capturing his chance encounters and observations whilst on tour, the release of The Drawn Blank Series in 2008 marked his UK fine art debut.

Likened to works by Pablo Picasso and Paul Cézanne, his paintings have been described by the Guardian as ‘evocative celebrations of life itself’. Dylan is lauded for his signature loose lines and instinctive brushstrokes, with later works embracing a bolder, more stylistic approach. Subsequent collections – including The Beaten Path, The Brazil Series, Train Tracks and Mondo Scripto – have created a new legion of Bob Dylan fans worldwide.

In 2019, he held his retrospective Retrospectrum exhibition at MAM Shanghai, which went on to open at Today's Art Museum in Beijing in July 2020. Featuring his artistic output to date, the tour will cover Asia, Europe and the USA.

  • Bob Dylan | Large Nat Finkelstein Signed Photograph Of Visit To Warhol's Factory
    Jan. 18, 2025

Bob Dylan | Large Nat Finkelstein Signed Photograph Of Visit To Warhol's Factory

    Est: $800 - $1,200

A black and white silver gelatin photograph, signed lower right in blue ballpoint pen by Warhol Factory photographer Nat Finkelstein.  This image appeared in Finkelstein's book Andy Warhol The Factory Years 1964-1967, published in 1989, as a quarter page image in the section titled "Enter Bobby The Waif, Exit Robert The Triumphant - Dylan Day." This photo captures Bob Dylan's visit to the factory and it is described in a text sheet that accompanies the smaller version of this image in the following lot:  "Bob Dylan was brought to The Factory by Barbara Rubin.  Andy was on the lookout for new recruits for his movies and had hoped that Bob would consent to be in one of the films.  At Bob's visit Andy presented him with one of the Elvis paintings.  Bob couldn't take anything Andy did seriously.  It was later learned through an article in the New York Magazine on Dylan that he used the painting for dart board practice.  Andy once remarked of Dylan as being 'corny'." Photographer Nat Finkelstein (1933-2009) was a photojournalist working in New York City for Black Star and PIX photo agencies.  He was hired by Pageant magazine in 1962 to cover Claes Oldenburg's "happening" in Greenwich Village for an article titled "What happens at a Happening?"  When Finkelstein met Andy Warhol in 1964 he offered to cover the "happenings" at Warhol's factory.  Warhol, who was familiar with the Oldenburg article, welcomed Finkelstein into the Factory's inner circle allowing him to capture the scene there for the next three years.

  • Bob Dylan | Original Ink Sketches On Writing Tablet
    Jan. 18, 2025

Bob Dylan | Original Ink Sketches On Writing Tablet

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

A Mohegan brand writing tablet with a single page filled with blue ballpoint pen doodles of faces in the hand of Bob Dylan.  The verso of this page and the next page in the tablet contain fourteen lines of text that have been artfully crossed out using geometric doodles to obscure each letter.  It is possible to make out some of the words that have been drawn over and partial phrases like, "You know those three magic paintings," and "They are asleep" or "How would you like to sweep that up."  The doodles and notations appear to have been done in one of Aronowitz's notebooks as a page further back in the notebook has what appears to be a draft in Aronowitz's hand about Yehudi Menuhin, the violinist and conductor who, as the notes mention, made his New York Debut at a young age in 1926 at the Manhattan Opera House.

  • Bob Dylan | Original Pencil Sketch Of A Feet On Plaza Hotel Memo Pad
    Jan. 18, 2025

Bob Dylan | Original Pencil Sketch Of A Feet On Plaza Hotel Memo Pad

    Est: $800 - $1,200

A yellow page torn from a memo pad from The Plaza hotel in New York city.  This pencil drawing, in the hand of Bob Dylan, features the soles of two shoes, drawn from an angle with the legs disappearing into the vanishing point of the drawing. The memo pad lists the telephone number for the hotel as PLAZA 9-3000, which is the 5 digit, alphanumeric telephone exchange system that went into place in New York City in approximately 1930.  In 1960, New York began to phase this system out slowly, eliminating exchange codes using letters slowly over time.  Based upon this, and contextual information provided by the consignor, we can date the drawing to the early to mid 1960s.

Bob Dylan | Original Pencil Sketches On Plaza Hotel Memo Pad

    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

A yellow memo pad from The Plaza hotel in New York City with eleven remaining pages: four with original pencil sketches in the hand of Bob Dylan; two with blue ballpoint sketches in another hand; and five blank pages.  The first page features an abstract doodle in pencil with the words "Now / Or / Now."  The second page features a pencil sketch of a man wearing a hat, talking to another man shown in profile.  The third page features a geometric doodle with crossed out notations in Dylan's hand on the verso.  The notes are heavily marked over but still visible featuring musical notes at the top of the page and reading "Stay out of my / Eyes / You only Bring / the ears / I don't understand why / you like you know it / okay."  The last page has a simple line drawing of the soles of two shoes. Based upon this, and contextual information provided by the consignor, we can date the drawings to the early to mid 1960s.

    Jan. 18, 2025

Bob Dylan | Two Original Pencil Sketches Of A Man On Plaza Hotel Memo Pad

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Two yellow pages torn from a memo pad from The Plaza hotel in New York city.  The drawings, both in pencil, are in the hand of Bob Dylan who it appears first created a line drawing of a man wearing glasses and a hat, while not looking at the page, accounting for the fact that the alignment of the elements of the man's face are off.  The second example appears to be of the same person but it is more clearly presented with a note at the bottom reading, "Man Looking / For Cab On 8th Ave / Sunday -" with parenthetical note above reading "(with hands / in pocket)." The memo pad lists the telephone number for the hotel as PLAZA 9-3000, which is the 5 digit, alphanumeric telephone exchange system that went into place in New York City in approximately 1930.  In 1960, New York began to phase this system out slowly, eliminating exchange codes using letters slowly over time.  Based upon this, and contextual information provided by the consignor, we can date the drawings to the early to mid 1960s.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

A yellow page torn from a memo pad from The Plaza hotel in New York city.  This pencil drawing, in the hand of Bob Dylan, is of a foot wearing an exaggeratedly pointed shoe with inscription that reads, "Victor's / Shoe / As / Shown / By / Delicatesin [sic] / Lights." The memo pad lists the telephone number for the hotel as PLAZA 9-3000, which is the 5 digit, alphanumeric telephone exchange system that went into place in New York City in approximately 1930.  In 1960, New York began to phase this system out slowly, eliminating exchange codes using letters slowly over time.  Based upon this, and contextual information provided by the consignor, we can date the drawing to the early to mid 1960s.

Bob Dylan | Original Pencil Sketch Of A Hand On Plaza Hotel Memo Pad

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

A yellow pages torn from a memo pad from The Plaza hotel in New York city.  The pencil drawing, in the hand of Bob Dylan, is of a hand drawing something on a memo page from a Plaza memo pad.  The drawing also captures the fact that the hand has a Band-Aid near the wrist and it has a note below that reads, "I AM / An Artist / (Bob)." The memo pad lists the telephone number for the hotel as PLAZA 9-3000, which is the 5 digit, alphanumeric telephone exchange system that went into place in New York City in approximately 1930.  In 1960, New York began to phase this system out slowly, eliminating exchange codes using letters slowly over time.  Based upon this, and contextual information provided by the consignor, we can date the drawing to the early to mid 1960s.
