  • Signed Paul Dyck Painting of a Zuni Dancer
    Sep. 01, 2022

Signed Paul Dyck Painting of a Zuni Dancer

    Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Paul Dyck (America, 1917-2006). Egg tempera and oil glaze painting on board, n.d. (ca. 1960s to 1980s). Signed on lower right. An outstanding painting of a Zuni dancer by artist and scholar Paul Dyck. The dancer is depicted full length in profile, dressed in traditional clothing, mask, and headdress with a quiver full of arrows on his back, a bow and arrow in one hand and a rattle in the other. Finely delineated in egg tempera and oil glaze with a vibrant palette, this painting is set in an attractive custom frame with a linen-covered matte. A wonderful painting of a Zuni dancer by Paul Dyck who in addition to being a respected artist was a published scholar of the Plains Indians. Size: 39.7" L x 29.5" W (100.8 cm x 74.9 cm) Size of frame: 44" L x 34" W (111.8 cm x 86.4 cm) Paul Dyck was born in Chicago, but lived among the indigenous tribes of Alberta, Canada during his early years. When he was only 8 years old, he began to study art in Europe, apprenticing to his uncle, an artist with studios in Paris, Florence, Praque, and Rome. By the age of 15, Dyck was a student at the Munich Academy. This introduction to the art world in Europe was invaluable; however, Dyck derived most of his artistic inspiration from Native American peoples of North America, creating figurative works that captured the legends and lore of indigenous cultures. Dyck had more than 65 solo exhibitions throughout the U.S. and also devoted himself to studying and preserving the history and culture of the Plains Indians. In addition to being a respected artist, he was an avid collector of art and material culture representing each and every Plains tribe, and in 2007, the year following Dyck's death, The Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming acquired the Paul Dyck Collection, thus preserving its many treasures - "objects associated with individuals of national significance in American cultural history including leaders such as Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce; great Lakota leaders Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse; the last recognized chief of the Crow nation, Plenty Coups; Mountain Chief, leader of the Blackfeet; and historic explorers, Lewis and Clark" as well as articles "associated with significant historical events including firearms and other weapons used at the Battle of Little Bighorn and objects associated with Curly and White Swan of the Crow 7th Cavalry scouts at the battle" and more. According to the curatorial team at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, "The artist Paul Dyck (1917 – 2006) devoted his life to the study of cultures and histories of Plains Indian people. With origins in his father’s collection begun in 1886 while living near the Blood Reserve in Alberta, Canada, Paul Dyck systematically expanded his collection over many years to represent excellence in Plains artistry and creativity through long-standing friendships and family relationships with Blackfeet, Crow, Cheyenne, Assiniboine, Arapaho, Nez Perce, Pawnee, Kiowa, Comanche, Otoe, and other Plains Native peoples." Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
