ÉDOUARD DUYCK (Brussels, 1856 - 1985). "Horses". Oil on canvas. With information label on the back. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 65 x 50 cm; 95 x 80 cm (frame). This work is part of a very developed genre in the 19th century England, the paintings with horses in costumbrist environments, described with a special detail, which are in fact portraits of real animals. As a result, such works usually present, as we see here, a clear, simple, classical composition with the animals in the centre, large in size, in a landscape setting. Édouard Duyck was a pupil at the School of Decorative Arts of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in rue du Midi, where he studied with Adolphe Crespin and Ernest Blanc-Garin, among others. Later, he took classes with Jean-Léon Gérôme. He was a co-founding member of L'Essor in 1879. He decorated the rooms of the Palais colonial de Tervueren and produced several posters between 1894 and 1896, including Spa Ferme de la Frahinfaz (printed by Van Buggenhout, 1894), reproduced by Jules Chéret in his review Les Maîtres de l'affiche (1895-1900).

The first floor gallery was decorated by Crespin. The celebrated Loïe Fuller performed there in 1894, and in 1897 a ‘Bioscope’ cinema sequence was the finale of the evening’s performance” (Belle Epoque 1970, p. 39). In this inviting maquette by Crespin and Duyck, there is less text than in the finalized version, allowing us to appreciate the whorls and subdued tones of the composition. (Art Nouveau; Sports)
