The current highest auction record for a work by Durruthy is more than €16,000 The wooden light box bv Juan Roberto Diago Durruthy (1971) shows a black and white photograph with the bust of a black man behind acrylic glass in the upper center. Above it reads the letters 'A' and 'B', and beneath are the written words 'El vive en mi' [He lives in me]. The man's face is barely visible. It is possibly a self-portrait of the artist. In his works, Durruthy deals with his Afro-Cuban identity and investigates subjects such as racism, religion and slavery. By linking the old with the new and the primitive with the urban - here illustrated in the combination of different materials -, Durruthy let us participate both in his roots and his presence. The work is signed several times with black marker, 'R/Diego', and titled several times 'El vive en mi' [He lives in me] on the reverse. It is in good condition, showing light wear. The overall dimensions are 84 x 74 cm. The functionality of the light box has not been verified and cannot be guaranteed. The current highest auction record for a work by Durruthy is more than €16,000 The present mixed media work by Juan Roberto Diago Durruthy (born 1971) from 2003 shows a black and white photograph with a seated black boy. Covered with wild and broad strokes of black oil paint, the portrait only reveals the upper body of the sitter. In the center of the composition appear crater-like relief formations of color that are seemingly caused by fire and scratching. Beneath it reads the words 'la espera' (The wait). Durruthy has succeeded in creating a sensitive portrait by formalizing human feelings like melancholy, rage and rebellion driven to extremes. On the one hand, in his works the artist deals with his Cuban identity, reaching from the history of his ancestries to the economic crisis of the 1990s. At the same time, his works make reference to the graffiti art, the Arte Povera and Durruthy's models in history of art, Michel Basquiat and Ed Ruscha. The work is inscribed with 'Roberto Diago /De la serie " rostros que sólo yo no veo "/ foto manipulada - edición unica / 2003' and signed 'R Diago', as well as signed again 'R/Diago' upper left and right on the reverse. The photograph is covered with a protective sheet and mounted in a black metal frame. The protective sheet dissolves in places from the photograph, and the framing is loose to the upper edge.
