Sam Durant (American, b. 1961). Acrylic sign with vinyl text reading "Tell It Like It Is!" The electric sign is signed and numbered 2/25 along a label affixed to the verso. Produced by Case Studyo, 2020. With original packaging and labeled wooden box. Provenance: Private Minnesota Collection. Lot Essay: Growing up near Boston in the 1970s Durant experienced anti-war and civil rights demonstrations as well as the attempt to desegregate the Boston school system. His early exposure to democratic ideals, racial equality, and social justice provided a base on which his artistic perspective was founded. His works often explore cultural, social, and political issues and engage with subjects such as the civil rights movement, southern rock music, and modernism. His works have been exhibited largely in the United States and Internationally. He has participated in the Panama, Sydney, Venice, and Whitney Biennials and has had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has also worked with the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota several times. The present lot represents Durant's second collaboration with Case Studyo. The message is heavily inspired by the social movements of the 1960s. The language used on protestors' signs and placards has been repurposed to create a new message. By placing it on a light box, the message screams for attention. The original light box was created in 2002 and was, at one point, placed in a window of the Public Prosecutors' Office of the City of Arnhem.
