Viel, list of plates), 67 pages of trade contract with three Moorish monarchs each in French-Arab, 16 maps with very exact illustrations of the coastline, the islands and the Senegal river course (engraved and folded). 27 plates illustrating travel experiences and depictions of local life, fauna and flora (engraved). Cover (half calf), gilt back, slightly spotted and rubbed, atlas slightly scuffed on edges, maps slightly foxed in some parts. Synopsis: Jean-Baptiste Durand, born 1742 in the Uzerche, spent some years in Cagliari (Italy) as consul. In 1785 during his time at the Ministry of the Navy he was appointed head of the French Africa-Compagnie. He spent 15 months travelling Senegal for agreements. The atlas therefore contains the copies of these contracts arranged between Durand and three Moorish monarchs, each in French-Arab. The maps with very exact illustrations of the coastline, the islands and the Senegal river course. The plates are illustrating his travel experiences and local life, fauna and flora. Durand's voyage was turbulent and his ship sank on the rocks of Temby off the coast of Wales. After his return, he continued his career in administration. He died in 1812 in Spain.
