Asher Brown Durand Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, copperplate engraver, Illustrator, b. 1796 - d. 1886

(b Maplewood, New Jersey, 1796; d Brooklyn, New York, September 1886) American Painter. Asher Brown Durand began his career as an engraver. Durand's success as an engraver gained him entrance into affluent circles, allowing him to become an influential figure in the arts. In 1825 Durand aided in the creation and organization of the New York Drawing Association, which later became known as the National Academy of Design. Durand acted as President of the Academy from 1845 to 1861. In the face of America's growing urbanization and industrialization, Durand turned to agricultural America for his primary inspiration and stressed a return to man's traditional relationship with nature, one of respect and reverence. The superb quality and innovation of his landscape paintings allowed Durand, along with his friend and fellow painter, Thomas Cole, to elevate landscape painting in the American psyche. His use of light and compositional format recall the work of Claude Lorrain and the seventeenth century Dutch landscapists, which Durand is thought to have studied during a tour of Europe from 1840 to 1841. Durand was not limited by these fundamentals, rather he blended them with his belief in a sincere and loyal representation of nature to create a refreshingly unique and sincere vision of America's countryside.* Durand relocated to New York City and continued to paint throughout his life. Sep. 21, 2024

ASHER B. DURAND ENGRAVING OF GENERAL ANDREW JACKSON

            Est: $3,000 - $5,000

DURAND, Asher B. (1796-1886), after John Vanderlyn. General Andrew Jackson. New Orleans Jany. 8th 1815. Engraving. New York: Printed by James R. Burton, June 1828. 28" x 21" sheet. A striking example of this famous portrait of Andrew Jackson by one of the greatest American engravers. Asher Durand was hailed as "the most famous engraver in America" and "the father of American landscape painting." His bold clean style was an immediate success, and he consequently produced some of the most important engravings in American print history. His "Musidora" and his Presidential series, are among the most cherished prints of the period, and his contribution to American landscape painting helped form the nation's artistic identity. Durand's portrait of Jackson depicts him standing full length in uniform with drawn sword in hand, and with the Battle of New Orleans raging in the background. The American victory at the seminal War of 1812 battle against a British force twice its size cemented Jackson's reputation and propelled him to the presidency. This engraving was commissioned by S. Converse based on the 1823 painting by John Vanderlyn (in New York's City Hall) and sold by subscription in the months leading to the 1828 election in which Jackson defeated John Quincy Adams.

            Sep. 21, 2024

ASHER B. DURAND ENGRAVING OF JOHN QUINCY ADAMS

            Est: $2,500 - $4,500

DURAND, Asher B. (1796-1886), after Thomas Sully. John Quincy Adams, President of the United States. Engraving. Philadelphia: W.H. Morgan, 1826. 26 1/2" x 18 5/8" sheet. A striking example of this famous portrait of John Quincy Adams by one of the greatest American engravers. Durand's portrait of John Quincy Adams is the quintessential example of his superior technique. Its clean lines and meticulous attention to detail create a magnetic image which immediately captivates the viewer's attention. Surrounded by maps and books Adams is portrayed as the enlightened president. His portrait, in composition and execution, is a wonderful example of presidential portraiture, and it is no wonder that the public clamored to purchase this magnificent image. "This engraving...was executed at the request of Thomas Sully for the Philadelphia print seller W. H. Morgan, who paid $700 for the plate" (Hudson River Museum). Although the Grolier catalogue and others have attributed the print to be after a portrait by Gilbert Stuart which was finished by Sully (i.e. the Harvard University portrait), the source for the engraving has been more correctly ascribed to a small work painted by Sully alone. The map on the table to Adams' left has been attributed by some to be a copy of the western portion of John Melish's framed map of the United States, which showed the boundaries as negotiated by the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819. An antique black and white engraving on paper, Declaration of Independence of The United States of America July 4th, 1774, 1823 after John Trumbull (1756-1843). Engraved by Asher B. Durand (1796-1886). Titled in the print lower to the center. Inscribed in the print lower right and left. John Trumbulls masterpiece, The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, July 4th, 1776, was begun at Jeffersons residence in Paris. Jefferson contributed a firsthand description of the Assembly Room and made a rough sketch of it. Later, Trumbull painted Jefferson from life for the Declaration and made three miniatures of the likeness. The committee responsible for the draft John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert R. Livingston, Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin was depicted to the right of the center. graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.

DURAND, ASHER BROWN - Criminal "Wanted Poster" 1823

            Est: $1,200 - $1,500

New York: Published for the benefit of the community, 8 December 1823. Line engraved portrait above engraved text (a 3-line title, 9 lines of text, plus the imprint). Sheet size: 6 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches. Trimmed close. Very rare, engraved portrait by Asher B. Durand of a noted New York swindler. Asher Durand was hailed as the most famous engraver in America and the father of American landscape painting. His bold clean style was an immediate success, and he consequently produced some of the most important engravings in American print history. The subject of this early American wanted poster had married Durand's sister, but deserted her shortly thereafter, prompting the Durand family to uncover his true history. Durand executed this small broadside portrait and privately distributed it in an attempt to shame Manners and prohibit him from harming another young woman. The text continues: A native of England, was educated a preacher in the Methodist connection from which he was expell'd for his crimes, afterwards became an outlaw'd swindler, fled from Sheffiled, leaving a wife & children & came to the United States, where he soon married again into a respectable family & is extensively known as a lecturer on mneumonics. He is classically educated & in appearance a gentleman, but in fact a most accomplished hypocrite. A volunteer of falsehood, none can be too base for his purpose. He abandoned his second wife without cause of complaint (which led to the discovery of his real character & history) has swindled his best friends, violated the most sacred bonds of honor & affection & in short, is not only an infidel in religion but in every moral principle of society. The Durand Papers at the New York Public Library includes a 12 September 1827 letter to Durand from his partner Elias Wade Jr., stating that Manners may possibly be somewhere in town watching your return, though I think it is a more probable supposition that he has either jumped off the dock or has gone in search of more comfortable quarters than this city afforded him. In addition to an example at the New York Public Library, OCLC locates only the example at the Clements Library.

Note: This portrait of Jackson depicts him standing full length in uniform with sword during the Battle of New Orleans. The American victory at the seminal War of 1812 battle against a British force twice its size cemented Jackson's reputation and propelled him to the presidency.
