          Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Attributed to FRANÇOIS DUQUESNOY (Brussels, 1597-Livorno, 1643). "Penitent Magdalene". Polychrome wax. With wax seal on the back. It has an inscription on the back with attribution. It conserves its period frame. Measurements: 15 x 11 cm; 36 x 32 cm (frame). This relief made in polychrome wax representing Mary Magdalene, has an inscription on the back where it can be read that the piece was modelled by François Duquesnoy, a Flemish Baroque sculptor who was active in Rome during most of his career. His idealised depictions are often contrasted with the more emotional character of Bernini's works, while his style shows a great affinity with the sculptures of Algardi. Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the New Testament as a distinguished disciple of Christ. According to the Gospels, she housed and provided materially for Jesus and his disciples during their stay in Galilee, and was present at the Crucifixion. She was a witness to the Resurrection, as well as the one in charge of transmitting the news to the apostles. She is also identified with the woman who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfumes before his arrival in Jerusalem, which is why her main iconographic attribute is a knob of essences, like the one shown here. Alone, Mary Magdalene is usually depicted as here, doing penance in the desert, repentant for her past sins. Covered in rags and wearing a skull, alluding to her sufferings as a penitent, she meditates on the Holy Scriptures. The story of this saint serves as an example of Christ's forgiveness, and conveys the message of the possibility of redemption of the soul through repentance and faith. While Eastern Christianity honours Mary Magdalene especially for her closeness to Jesus, considering her "equal to the apostles", in the West the idea developed, based on her identification with other women in the Gospels, that before meeting Jesus she had been a prostitute. Hence the later legend that she spent the rest of her life as a penitent in the desert, mortifying her flesh. In art, she was most often depicted in this way, especially in the 17th century, a time when Catholic societies were particularly fascinated by the lives of mystics and saints who lived in solitude in the wilderness, dedicated to prayer and penance. The theme of the Magdalen, moreover, offered the possibility of representing a beautiful woman showing parts of the anatomy then considered taboo, such as the feet or the breast, but respecting decorum in that she is mortified flesh expressing repentance for her past sins.

CIRCLE OF FRANCOIS DUQUESNOY (1597-1643) CHRIST CHILD Italy, Rome, 17th century Bronze H. 67 cm This bronze shows a naked and chubby infant, whose curves are underlined by folds on the belly and the thighs. Shown seated, his right foot crossed over the left one, his arms moving, he lifts his right hand which seems to be closed on an element that is now missing. The head turned to the right, his expression is full of life - plain cheeks, the mouth is wide open, the eyes staring with great intensity. The hair is short but delicately frame the face with a set of wavy locks and forming a big falling lock on the forehead. Directly inspired by the putti and child models produced by Duquesnoy (fig. 1-3), the position of the arms suggests that the subject is a child Christ.

Eleven putti sitting, standing, kneeling, lying; head up, down, turned; arms raised, stretched towards the ground, across the chest. Although a later copy, this drawing is valuable as it depicts numerous statuettes of putti, most probably terracottas, modelled by Duquesnoy (Brussel 1597-1643 Livorno). It was drawn after models kept in an artists' workshop or belonging to a collector such as those from the 18th century in Paris: Girardon, Crozat, Croyat du Châtel, etc. Several of these putti relate to extant Duquesnoy sculptures. Ref. Boudon-Machuel, Marion - François du Quesnoy. Paris, Athena, 2005, fig. 46, In.82 dér. 1 (i.e. our drawing); In.107 dér.1 and In.111 dér. 1.
