      Circuit de l'Anjou. 1914.

      Est: $17,000 - $20,000

ARTIST: E. DUPONT SIZE: 46 5/8 x 63 in./121 x 160 cm PRINTER: Imp. Marcial, Goffin & Co., Paris DESCRIPTION: The second race from the Automobile Club Anjou stands out as a benchmark of the times—not because the race was so provocative, but because it directly precipitated World War I. The race on July 27, 1914 followed a 31 km route with 24 competitors and many excited onlookers. Ferenc Szisz claimed first place with his Lorraine. Later that same day, Austria declared war against Serbia. By August 2, the French army had begun mobilizing. And while our winner of the race was forced to leave his career behind to join the French army, he survived a case of typhoid, and then followed a new path in an aviation factory. Due to the turmoil following this race, it is a very rare surviving work. (Art Nouveau; Automobiles)
