Jean Theodore Dupas (1882 - 1964) Mixed media on cardstock, signed and dated 1936, measures 16 x 9.5 inches, w/frame22.5 x 16 inches Jean Dupas is known for painting and at deco glass design. He was born in Bordeaux in 1882. He studied with Carolus-Duran and Albert Besnard at l'École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux.Dupas was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1910. He exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français and received several awards at the salon, including a Gold Medal in 1922. In 1925 Dupas finally received international fame when he was asked by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann to decorate his pavilion at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels in Paris. He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1926. Dupas worked as a ceramist with René Buthaud in the Sèvres porcelain factory in the early 1920's, though Dupas' interests soon turned to other art forms including poster design, painting under glass, tapestry, mosaics and lacquer.

Jean Dupas studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His graphic-decorative Art Deco style developed early during his stay in Italy after 1909. Dupas owed the stretching of proportions and quasi-systematic deformation of his mostly female figures, which his critics in the 1920s somewhat casually referred to as the "stovepipe style," to the influence of the Italian Mannerists. His favorite subjects included young women with elaborate hairstyles, voluminous and moving clothing, idealized landscapes, and fantastic birds. Through his penchant for fashion and decorative aesthetics, he captured the glamor and sophistication of the Roaring Twenties. Numerous commissions for the Exposition Internationale in 1925, for the ballroom of the Bourse du Travail in Bordeaux, for the Église du Saint-Esprit in Paris, and for the Salon de l'Argenterie at the Royal Palace in Bucharest, among others, attest to his popularity. JEAN DUPAS (1882-1964) ARNOLD CONSTABLE. 1928. 43 3/4x29 1/2 inches, 111x75 cm. Tolmer, Paris. Condition A. Matted and framed. Dupas was trained as an academic painter and became a successful graphic designer and interior decorator. His style is the essence of refined and luxurious French Art Deco, with a sophisticated, if somewhat stiff, elegance. Outside of the poster world, Dupas is largely remembered for his illustrations for Vogue, the splendid brochures for Max Furrier and his decorations for the steamship Normandie (now at the MoMA). This poster, commissioned by the Arnold Constable department store, is designed in the sophisticated Art Deco style of allegorical fantasies which was a hallmark of Dupas' work. Here, he depicts three women dressed in the fashions of the past, present and future, amid lush, slightly surrealistic scenery. Tolmer p. 79.

ARTIST: JEAN DUPAS (1882-1964) SIZE: 12 5/8 x 17 in./32 x 43.2 cm DESCRIPTION: This is a double-sided drawing created as a preparatory work for Dupas’ “History of Navigation” mural, which is in the collection of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dupas’ wife served as his model for the character of Amphitrite—the goddess of the sea and the wife of Poseidon—featured prominently in the finalized work. “This extraordinary mural was one of four executed by Charles Champigneulle in 1934 for the corners of the Normandie's first-class Grand Salon. The history of navigation is its nominal subject, but the profusion of quasi-historical vessels and miscellaneous mythical creatures clearly was not meant to tell a story but rather to create an overwhelming decorative effect. Passengers on the Normandie paid not so much for transportation as for atmosphere, and the first-class lounge was a temple of glamour” (Met Museum website). Jean-Théodore Dupas (French 1882 – 1964), a chromolithograph 'XVME Salon des Artistes Decorateurs', Signed en bloc ‘Jean Dupas 1924', Lithograph in colours, framed and glazed, Visible sheet 57.5 cm x 38cm; frame 65.4 cm x 45.7 cm Not removed from the frame. The sheet shows some undulation/rippling on the lower section with the text. A few age spots on the ‘empty/void’ parts. The frame has taken a few knocks and scrapes. Generally colours seem quite good.

ARTIST: JEAN DUPAS (1882-1964) SIZE: 10 1/4 x 12 3/4 in./26 x 32.5 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Between 1928 and 1930, Dupas lent his elegant illustrative skills to Saks Fifth Avenue, which had opened its flagship store in Manhattan in 1924. Although its soon-to-be neighbor, Rockefeller Center, would not unveil its ice skating rink until 1936, Dupas had the foresight to place his statuesque femmes on ice. Wind-blown and bundled up in Jazz Age winter fashions, these chic moms let us know that we, too, can be as cool as a Dupas woman by shopping at Saks. The text at bottom reads: “Adolescents sur glace, 19 novembre 1928. Saks Fifth Avenue.” Based on notes from Dupas, this work was likely intended to be displayed in Saks stores for their Winter 1928 campaign. (Art Deco; Fashion; New York)

ARTIST: JEAN DUPAS (1882-1964) SIZE: 5 3/8 x 7 1/4 in./13.6 x 18.5 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: This original drawing was likely intended for an American fashion magazine. Dupas’ annotations illuminate his final plans for the work: a blue sky, fine and sharp; fresh pink flesh and fairly dark black hair; a pearl ear pendant; cold foliage; make the hair volume much higher or lower, to be determined. He also includes references to other works: page 478 from Vie journal of 1865, a poster from the XV Salon of Decorative Arts in 1924, and the painting “La femme à la boule,” presented on Rulhmann’s stand in 1924. It’s an insightful look into this prolific artist’s process. (Art Deco; Fashion)
