(b Brunswick, Maine 1829; d Westport Harbor, Massachusetts, 1905) American Painter. As a young adult, Robert Spear Dunning worked as a coastal shipping employee at the Fall River Mill in Maine. In his free time, Dunning studied art, focusing on landscapes and portraits. The year 1865 was a turning point for the artist, when he began to concentrate on creating still-life compositions. Five years later, in 1870, Dunning opened and founded the Fall River Evening Drawing School, which was designed for still-life artists. Dunning exhibited at the National Academy of Design in the early 1850s and the Boston Art Club in 1880.
