Dunn, Harvey Thomas(1884 1952) Harvey Thomas Dunn is best known as an illustrator, painter, and muralist. Though based in the East, particularly New Jersey and New York, his native state of South Dakota remained the inspiration for his finest works, which were scenes of prairie life and toil. Born in 1884 in Manchester, in the Red Stone Valley of South Dakota, he was raised in a sod house on the prairie, where he lived with his parents until he was 17 years old. There Dunn, a large boy, devoted his time to farm chores, school, and his drawing. During a year he spent at the South Dakota Agriculture College in 1901, his teacher Ada Caldwell, an influential South Dakota artist herself, recognized Dunn's abilities. She encouraged him to continue his studies at the Chicago Art Institute, which he did, and Dunn always acknowledged the opportunities she opened to him. His tuition was earned by janitor work, odd jobs, and as a summer farm hand. His artistic talent was evident in his drawings, and he was able to convince one of Americas foremost illustrators of that time, Howard Pyle, to admit him to his classes at Wilmington and Chadd's Ford. Dunn was on his own by 1906, selling his art to the magazine markets of the day. With N.C. Wyeth as his best man, Dunn married in 1908. He left Wilmington after Pyle died in 1911, and moved to Leonia, New Jersey, where the art markets were more attractive. One his best clients became The Saturday Evening Post. Along with artist Charles Chapman, Dunn opened the Leonia School of Illustration in 1915, at the inspiration of Howard Pyle. World War I caused a brief intermission of Dunn's career. In 1917, at the age of 33, Dunn was one of eight artists chosen to serve as a graphic reporter on the front lines. This was despite his being past the age of military service. His efforts were fearless, and he filled his logs with profound mental and physical images of ruin. He returned to his private works after being discharged at wars end in 1919. Many of his military drawings are housed at the Smithsonian. He moved to Tenefly, New Jersey the same year, building a large studio near his home. Feeling the compulsion to create a more lasting art, in addition to illustrations, Dunn accepted a commission by a New York department store 1925 to paint five mural-like panels for its 100th anniversary. In 1928, the American Legion Monthly magazine began featuring Dunn's war canvases, completed from his image sketches, on its monthly covers. Recording for history his vision of the war was one of his goals. Other goals were to capture the beauty of his native prairies, and to teach. He succeeded at both. The prairies were included on Legion Monthly magazine covers, and Dunn was able to teach at the Grand Central School of Art, at the Art Students League in New York. Selected students were allowed classes in his personal studio. Some of Dunn's students included Dean Cornwell, Saul Tepper, Lyman Anderson, Mario Cooper, Harold von Schmidt, and John Clymer. Although few of Dunn's prairie paintings saw print, Dunn himself donated 42 to the now named South Dakota State University in 1950. In 1970, his works were transferred to the South Dakota Art Museum, which now houses 144 paintings, drawings and prints by the artist. A fine example of his painting in that collection is The Prairie Is My Garden, which projects a combination of the beauty and the hardships of pioneer life and a sense of the stalwart men and women Dunn wished to memorialize. In the present work, Dunn skillfully depicts colonial soldiers moving stealthily under the cover of night, rushing towards victory at Fort Ticonderoga with a surprise attack at dawn. The splashing water of the creek and the lengthening of strides of the soldiers perfectly encapsulates the rushed sense that this is the singular moment– lightning striking only once – for the Colonials to prevent defeat. The Battle of Ticonderoga was the first battle in the American Revolution that the ragged and varied Colonials won. It was a decisive victory carried out by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold. Built at a narrows near the south end of Lake Champlain in northern New York State, Fort Ticonderoga's key location was the barrier of the North and West portions of the United States. By taking the fort, the Colonials would effectively prevent the British from flanking their forces and coming up behind General Washington's army. Additionally, the Colonials utilized over fifty cannons and military supplies taken from the fort to relieve the siege of Boston and therefore, this attack would lead to a key second win for the revolutionaries. The importance of these first few victories was vital to continued American defiance and morale – this particular triumph would demonstrate that despite going against the best military in the world, the Americans could in fact win. To illustrate this moment, Dixon Ticonderoga hired Dunn, a prominent office and art supplies maker. They could not have chosen a better artist for this action filled scene. Dunn trained under Howard Pyle at his Brandywine School. Similar to his mentor, Dunn is meticulous in composition and draftsmanship, as seen in Dawn, Dawn, Dawn. The arch created by the tree at far left, juxtaposed against the wave of coming rain and lightning, highlights the central fighter, while a swooping diagonal line against his feet creates interest as well as a feeling of an unsteady and rushed movement. However, where Pyle and Dunn vary is their approach to the canvas. According to a fellow artist, "He [Dunn] literally attacked a canvas and sometimes I thought he would impale the painting with his brush" (A.R. Mitchell, Harvey Thomas Dunn 1884-1952, Trinidad, Colorado, 2018, n.p.). Dunn's visceral approach to painting is clearly seen in his quick and confident brushwork. The thick impasto, anchored by rich brown tones, leads the eye of the viewer once again towards the central figure. These swirling touches lend the painting an almost regionalist feel, but more importantly they create a sense of immediacy–The viewer naturally feels the tunnel vision of adrenaline with details fading away by the edges. EXHIBITED: Guild Artists Bureau of Manhattan, New York, "Sexhibition," 1941. LITERATURE: Time magazine, June 9, 1941, n.p., illustrated. As legendary Illustration Art collector Charles Martignette wrote, "In 1941 the Guild Artists Bureau of Manhattan invited all of the famous illustrators to submit a nude fine art painting for a public exhibition to be entitled 'Sexhibition.' The idea was that the American public could visit the show and actually vote on their favorite choices for first place in five different categories. In 1939 Harvey Dunn had painted the best nude of his life. Unlike his previous nudes, which were generally on the small side, this 'Fine Art,' museum-quality painting was an oil on canvas, and very large. Most of Dunn's previous nudes were either immediately sold or given away to friends. This one was Mr. Dunn's favorite which he had decided to keep for himself, so it seemed to be the most appropriate selection for him to submit to the show. When the show concluded, Dunn's sensuous reclining nude had won all five categories as the number one choice of the voting public. This caused so much press and media attention, Time magazine decided to run a feature story about Dunn and his provocative painting in the June 9, 1941 issue, with a great photograph of Harvey Dunn posing in front of his most famous nude oil painting." According to Mr. Martignette, the painting was purchased by a collector shortly after the 1941 exhibit, "by making Dunn an extremely attractive financial offer to facilitate the acquisition. For the next 50 years, Dunn's nude painting was never again seen by the American public." HID04901242017
