Carmelita Dunlap San Ildefonso Blackware Lidded Pot Pottery Vase Signed

        Est: $200 - $450

Item Description Incredible one-of-a-kind lidded vessel crafted by Carmelita Dunlap. Carmelita Dunlap (1925-1999) was a renowned potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo, who was born to Juanita and Romando Vigil. After her mother's passing when she was young, Carmelita was raised by her aunts Maria Martinez and Desideria Montoya, both of whom were renowned potters in their own right. She learned the craft of pottery-making by watching her aunts work and soon developed her own unique style of painting motifs of nature's elements in balanced, rhythmic designs onto the polished surface using a yucca brush dipped in clay. Carmelita was considered the last living protégé of Maria Martinez until her death in 2000. She won Indian Market first place twenty times, an unprecedented feat to this day. After Carmelita's passing, her daughter Cynthia Starflower has taken her place as the second in line to Maria Martinez. Cynthia also brought back the "Sunrise" brown pottery seven years after her brother Carlos passed away. Linda Dunlap, Carmelita's daughter, is a master potter with beautiful burnish work and is third in line to Maria. She is also one of the last Grandmaster potters currently working in San Ildefonso Pueblo. During the Nixon administration, Carmelita was designated a National Treasure, and one of her large pots was displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. This legacy of excellence continues to this day and is a testament to Carmelita Dunlap's skill and creativity.
