          Dec. 02, 2023

          R. DUNKARTON (*1744) after WEST (*1738), Paetus and Arria, 1773,

          Est: €450 - €600

Robert Dunkarton (1744 London - 1811 ) after Benjamin West (1738 Springfield - 1820 London): Paetus and Arria, 1773, Mezzotint Technique: Mezzotint on Date: 1773 Description: Signed and dated below the image and with publication line: "Benj. West pinxt. / Rob. Dunkarton sculpt / Published May 1773 by J. Boydell Engraver in Cheapside". Arria the Elder was a woman in ancient Rome who became famous for her suicide, as recorded by Pliny. When her husband hesitated to commit suicide, she took the dagger, plunged it into her chest and returned it to her husband with the words "Paete, non dolet" ("Paetus, it does not hurt"). Benjamin West was one of the first internationally significant American painters, his subject matter being historical scenes around and after the time of the American War of Independence. He was the second president of the Royal Academy in London. King George III commissioned West to paint portraits of members of the royal family. He painted Princes Edward and William, for example, and the King also had himself painted twice by West. The painter is known for his large-scale historical paintings with expressive figures and a compositional scheme that helps the viewer to identify the scene depicted. He was buried in St Paul's Cathedral (painter's corner). Keywords: 18th century, Romanticism, Portraits, United Kingdom,
