Robert Scott Duncanson (American, 1821-1872) Mountain Brook Oil on canvas 24 x 3

      Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Robert Scott Duncanson (American, 1821-1872) Mountain Brook Oil on canvas 24 x 36 inches (61.0 x 91.4 cm) Signed lower right: R.S. Duncanson Property of a Distinguished New York Collector  PROVENANCE: Richard Smith, Rhode Island; Acquired by the present owner from the above, circa 2000. Robert Scott Duncanson holds an important position in the annals of American history as the first African-American artist to achieve national and international recognition. His contemporaries recognized him as the leading landscapist west of the Allegheny mountains. Duncanson derived his subjects from diverse sources, many literary, other biblical and still others, as with the present work and the following lot, inspired by his travels. Born and raised in New York State, the artist was met with racial prejudice regularly, from an early age. As a result, Duncanson's father took him to Canada to be educated in a more tolerant atmosphere. As an artist, he was largely self-taught and studied reproductions of the Hudson River School painters. In 1841, he joined his mother in Cincinnati, Ohio, and shortly after began exhibiting there. Duncanson traveled widely from Cincinnati, doing numerous landscapes and also some daguerreotypes. In 1853, he traveled to Europe, returning to paint classical motifs into his landscapes, obviously influenced by his exposure abroad to Neo-Classicism. Always remaining true to his own mandate to paint the landscape which he believed God to have created, Duncanson painted works that echoed the peace and tranquility of an unspoiled and idyllic earthly paradise.
