What might seem to be abrupt changes in retrospect was actually a slow evolution constituted by the successive works. Every beginning, a new project is marked with great anticipation, excitement and fear. I always have to overcome the last before I can give vent to the rest. Conviction is of utmost importance in whatever subject my work is about, be it a tree, a colour, a thought, or an idea. I am searching for its truth, its essence. . ."- Caroline Dukes - Caroline Dukes was born in 1929 in Ujpest, Hungary and lived there during the German occupation band under the Stalin Era. She began her training in Budapest, studying sculpture with Sigiesmund de Strobl at the Academy of Fine Arts. Dukes immigrated to Canada in 1958 with her husband and children, first to Toronto and then nine years later to Winnipeg. In 1968 Dukes entered the School of Art at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1972. Within two years she had established her own studio, taught classes, and had her first solo exhibition at the Fleet Gallery in Winnipeg. She also received the "Highest Quality and Most Original Painting" Award at the Manitoba Society of Artists exhibition that same year. By the early 1980s she was quite active in the regional art world, during which time her painting hand changed dramatically from stylized abstract-like interiors to highly expressive and monumental gestural reflections of the innate energy of the natural world. In 1991 The Winnipeg Art Gallery mounted a solo exhibition of her work titled At the Focus of Forces and in 1996 her installation Remember...Relate...Retell was hosted by Plug In ICA.Dukes exhibited her work in both solo and group exhibitions across Canada and abroad, including shows in Jerusalem, Munich and Barcelona. Her work is represented in major collections world-wide, including the Budapest Museum of Fine Art, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Canada Council Art Bank, Manitoba Arts Council Art Bank, and the Princess Anne Collection. In 1994, she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Dukes passed away in 2003, leaving a remarkable body of work that dealt with memory, loss, tragedy, and the human spirit's amazing capacity to overcome. She was honoured posthumously with a 2008 solo retrospective, Concealed Memories, at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.Selected Corporate, Private and Public CollectionsAsper Jewish Community Centre, Winnipeg, ManitobaBudapest Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, HungaryCanada Council Art Bank, Ottawa, ONCARA Operations Ltd, Mississauga, ONCKY-TV, Moffat Communications Ltd, Winnipeg, MBClaridge Collection, Montréal, QCComcheq Corporation, Winnipeg, MBEsso Resources CanadaGreat West Life Insurance Company, Winnipeg, MBGulf Canada Resources, Calgary, ABHewlett-PackardInter-City GasInvestors Group, Toronto, ONLoring Ward Investment Counsel Ltd.Manitoba Arts Council Visual Art Bank, Winnipeg, MBMusée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Montréal, QCNorman MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, SKNorth Dakota Museum of Art, Grand Forks, North DakotaPrincess Anne Collection, EnglandRobert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, ONShell Canada, Calgary, ABSt John's College, Winnipeg, MBTaylor McCaffrey Chapman, Winnipeg, MBToronto-Dominion Bank, Toronto, ONUniversity of Winnipeg Art CollectionWinnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg, MBYad Vashem Art Museum, Jerusalem, IsraelSelected Solo Exhibitions2008Concealed Memories, Winnipeg Art Gallery, MB1998Cities, Gallery 1C03, University of Winnipeg, MB1996-92 Remember . . .
