ARTIST: CLÉMENTINE-HÉLÈNE DUFAU (1869-1937) SIZE: 42 1/2 x 58 5/8 in./108 x 149 cm PRINTER: Imp. G. de Malherbe, Paris DESCRIPTION: Dufau, a rare female artist of the period, was born in the Basque country: an ideal location for this illustration of Pelote Basque. The effect she creates here is stunning. As the player whips the ball back upon the playing field, he looks right at the female spectator. She returns his glance. Immediately, all of the energy and motion of the athlete's torque is transferred to the woman's clothing; frenetic brushstrokes capture the whizz of the ball and the sexual frisson of the moment. ARTIST: CLÉMENTINE-HÉLÈNE DUFAU (1869-1937) SIZE: 54 x 39 in./137.3 x 99 cm PRINTER: Imp. Charle Verneau, Paris DESCRIPTION: “La Fronde was the organ of the French radical feminist movement founded by suffragette Marguerite Durand. The magazine aroused much controversy and local ordinances were passed forbidding its dissemination in schools or workplaces, or sale on newsstands. Despite this persecution, the periodical somehow survived until World War I. In the design, the woman in green obviously stands for Durand, symbolically pointing the way forward to her followers. The artist Dufau was an outspoken champion of women’s rights herself, and this poster justly became her most famous work” (Gold, p. 72). (Art Nouveau; Literary)

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Dufau, Clémentine-Hélène (1869-1937) La Fronde. Paris: Charle Verneau, 1898. Large landscape format chromolithographic poster advertising the radical French feminist newspaper, La Fronde; mounted on linen and lightly rolled, 54 x 39 in. La Fronde, or The Slingshot, was founded by feminist activist Marguerite Durand (1864-1936) and first published in December 1897. The paper was managed, edited and composed exclusively by women. In a contemporary newspaper interview published in the British press, Durand said that she was inspired to start La Fronde when Paris "match girls" staged a general strike. "I made up my mind that a journal was absolutely necessary, not only to force the Chamber of Deputies to recognize that we had civil and political rights, but also to defend the interests of poor women workers and to guide them in forming themselves into unions or in joining existing syndicates, because I am convinced that mixed trade unions are needed to put an end to the terrible competition of the sexes, and to force employers of labor to respect the principle of equal pay for equal work." Dufau's image reinforces Durand's general plan, depicting a well-dressed woman in the foreground gesturing out over Paris while clasping the hand of a gaunt disheveled woman with a small child.

CLEMENTINE HELENE DUFAU (1869-1937) LA FRONDE. 1898. 39x54 inches, 99x137 1/4 cm. Charles Verneau, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears and extensive overpainting in margins. Dufau, primarily a painter, took much of her inspiration from the Basque country from whence her family came. Although she was not a professional graphic artist, every time she tried her hand at designing a poster, she was successful. In 1896 she won a contest to design a poster for the Bal des Increvables, and in 1903 she won another competition for her poster for Byrrh tonic. In 1898, Dufau was accepted as a member of the Société des Artistes Français. That same year, she was commissioned to design a poster to advertise a new feminist magazine, La Fronde. " La Fronde was the organ of the French radical feminist movement founded by the suffragette Marguerite Durand. The magazine aroused much controversy, and local ordinances were passed forbidding its dissemination in schools and workplaces, or sale on newsstands . . . the woman in green obviously stands for Durand, symbolically pointing the way forward to her followers" (Gold p. 72). Crauzat, writing in l'Estampe et l'Affiche, referred to this poster as a "superb composition of grandiose realism and vibrating symbolism." That Dufau's work was inspired by Steinlen is clear, but in return his work may have been influenced by hers, as his poster Le Petit Sou (1900) is conceptually constructed the same way. DFP-II 313, Gold 98, Maitres 1900 p. 59, Wember 234, Wine Spectator 106.

Academie Julian was one of the first academies to accept female students and also allow women to study nude, one of Dufau’s favorite subjects. The artist is best known for her posters during the Belle Epoque period with the most famous poster La Fronde, 1898, showing the rise of the feminist movement in France.

It would feature exhibitions from the major French colonies as well as other areas of Southeast Asia. While the event proved popular, it would leave the city in financial ruin for nearly a decade.

G. de Malherbe, Paris If there were few female artists during the Belle Époque, there were even fewer good and successful ones. Dufau, however, never created a bad poster -- in fact, she frequently won competitions and commissions, the end results of which have given us some of the best designs of the era. Coming from the Basque region of France, it seemed natural that an artist of such skill would be the ideal choice to represent the area's homegrown sport of jai-alai. There is a deft delicacy in the way she portrays the sportsmen, a perfect mastery of how to replicate the moment of sheer rapture as the women inhale in surprise. It is a beautiful balance between glamour and excitement.

CLEMENTINE-HELENE DUFAU (1869-1937) PELOTE BASQUE. Circa 1903. 58 1/2x42 1/2 inches, 148 1/2x108 cm. G. de Malherbe, Paris. Condition B / B+: repaired tears and restoration in margins and image; abrasions and creases in image. Dufau, a painter of Basque origin, was one of the few women artists who designed posters during the Belle Epoque. In 1898 she was accepted as a member of the Societé des Artistes Français. Although she was not a professional graphic artist, every time she designed a poster, she was successful. In 1896 she won a contest to design a poster for the Bal des Increvables and in 1903 she won another competition for her poster advertising Byrrh tonic. As jai-alai is originally a Basque sport, Dufau was an obvious choice to design this poster. She was familiar with the game and was able infuse the image with a natural fluidity and grace as well as a keen eye for the spectacle and glamour of an afternoon's sporting event. Sportissimo p. 69, Gold 129.

Condition B+: creases, foxing and abrasions in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds; text panel attached to upper margin. Framed. Dufau, a painter of Basque origin, was one of the few women artists who designed posters during the Belle Epoque. Part of her career involved a movement called "Art at School." The program, initiated by the French government, placed lithographs in schools to familiarize children with art. Four of her works from this program, which were acclaimed by the authorities for their high moral standards, were published. Perhaps the combination of children and school prepared her for the commission she received to design this poster a year later. The image she created for the exhibition, l'Enfant a Travers les Ages (Children through the ages), at the Petit Palais in Paris, is done in a soft-toned, loving manner using flat colors very much in the style of Vuillard. Societe des Miniaturistes et Enlumineurs. CLEMENTINE-HELENE DUFAU (1869-1937) Imp. Charles Verneau, Paris Cond B-/Restored tears at folds and edges. For those not familiar with the specific terminology used in this exquisitely-halcyon Dufau advertisement, an illuminator is an artist that specializes in the decoration of a portion of a page with gold and silver inks or brilliant colors featuring elaborate designs or miniature pictures. And that's precisely what Dufau sets forth in this poster for the Fourth Exhibition of French Miniaturists and Illuminators-albeit in an allegorically captivating manner-presented by Georges Petit. Petit (1856-1920) was a French art dealer, a key figure in the Paris art world and an important promoter and cultivator of Impressionist artists-most notably Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir and Auguste Rodin. Dufau was one of the first women to make a name for herself as a poster artist. Originally a naturalistic painter, she later became a lithographer in the decorative and symbolist veins. Poster: CLEMENTINE HELENE DUFAU (1869-1937) LA FRONDE. 1898.

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

CLEMENTINE HELENE DUFAU (1869-1937) LA FRONDE. 1898. 39 1/4x54 3/4 inches. Condition B: minor losses along vertical and horizontal folds and at edges; staining in margins. Dufau was primarily a painter taking much of her inspiration from the Basque country from whence her family came. Although she was not a professional graphic artist, every time she tried her hand at designing a poster she was successful. In 1896 she won a contest to design a poster for the Bal des Increvables and in 1903 she won another competition for her poster for Byrrh tonic. In 1898 Dufau was accepted as a member of the Societé des Artistes Français. That same year, Marguerite Durand, who had recently founded a feminist magazine, "La Fronde," commissioned Dufau to design a poster advertising her new publication. "La Fronde was the organ of the French radical feminist movement founded by the suffragette Marguerite Durand. The magazine aroused much controversy, and local ordinances were passed forbidding its dissemination in schools and workplaces, or sale on newsstands . . . the woman in green obviously stands for Durand, symbolically pointing the way forward to her followers" (Gold p. 72). Crauzat, writing in l'Estampe et l'Affiche referred to this poster as a "superb composition of grandiose realism and vibrating symbolism." That Dufau's work was inspired by Steinlen is clear, but in return his work may have been influenced by hers, as his poster Le Petit Sou (1900), is conceptually constructed the same way. DFP II 313, Gold 98, Maitres 1900 p. 59, Wember 234.
