    Est: $300 - $500

WILLIAM DUANE (1760-1835) American journalist who was editor of the Philadelphia Aurora, making it the leading organ of the Democratic-Republican party. He took over the editing duties of the paper in 1798 when Benjamin Franklin Bache was arrested for sedition. Fine content A.L.S. 4pp. 4to., Washington, Nov. 8, 1863 to Israel Israel (d. 1821) of Philadelphia warning of political intrigue by the Federalists against the Jefferson Administration and the Democratic-Republicans. He writes, in part: "… In this case, as in all other political cases, let it be offered I know no friendships which are not founded on the conservation of the public freedom, the union of the republicans and are open and unequivocal disconnexion [sic] and disavowal of Tory or Federal connections…Mankind is too alert to be blinded and misled by prosperity, and if in the course of human events this accident should be my fate with every one of my friends in perception. I can never deviate myself from the line upon which I have worked thro' my whole life; I shall as Dr. Franklin said go right on, and if my friends go aside or a crooked road, my distance will be shorter... The information I have received is to this effect- that a part is forming and measures taking to divide the Republican interest in the City, and county at the next Election…. Observe that I communicate this information to you not saying it is true., nor giving my own opinion upon it... It would be useless to offer you any new [?] on the information - your own sagacity, will discover that even the rumour must have a pernicious effect, and tend to the countenance the operations & the expectations of our adversaries, that republican government is unstable and the people their own worst enemies. Had I any intelligence to communicate beside what you will see in the Aurora, you should have it. Congress possess more talent at present than for several years, part and our friend Clay already holds a high place in the estimation of the ablest men, on account of his various talents, knowledge, and capacity. On the committee of Ways and Means, he is confided already the ablest men in Congress. And his only fault is not dishonorable to him, that is his modesty and diffidence in himself" If Israel did stand against Joseph Clay, he was unsuccessful as Clay continued in Congress until 1808. Israel Israel was a prominent Philadelphian, an innkeeper and who for some time served as sheriff of Philadelphia. Partial fold separations and a few tears, loss from seal tear, else very good condition.

PROVENANCE Charles Hicock (signature, Southbury, 15 September 1819) LITERATURE American Imprints 12468, 17406 NOTE First American edition; scarce. The first-published section of this work is bound at the end of the first volume and bears a separate title-page: The System of Discipline and Manoeuvres of Infantry, forming the Basis of Modern Tactics; established for the National Guards and Armies of France. Translated for the American Military Library, from the Edition published by authority in 1805. A joint exhibition on military training by the Kansas State University and the U.S. Cavalry Memorial Research Library, Fort Riley, pointed out that Duane's "anthology of treatises on tactics documents the importance of military writing in a society that often rejects the idea of a mass standing army. At a time when American political culture required reliance on militia forces rather than a large professional army, Americans concerned with military readiness turned to the printed book as one means of trying to ensure the preparedness of part-time military forces." The plates are numbered erratically and non-sequentially; it cannot be determined if the present copy contains a full complement of engravings, or even if there was a standard number issued with the edition.
