In 1935 František Drtikol stopped his photographic activity and devoted himself mainly to painting and spiritual teachings. It was painting that helped him to fully express the meaning values he attached to light. His paintings dealt with the themes of productive landscapes, symbolic figurative compositions related to photographs of nudes, and often depicted glowing female figures, stripped of unnecessary earthly ballast. Glowing women, archetypal beings who move quite freely, have found an earthly paradise. Carefree, wise and sharing a transcendent world of knowledge and infinite possibilities. 1947 | technique: oil on wood | 20 x 39 cm | signature: bottom right | framed Lot description Frantisek Drtikol, known primarily as an important Czech photographer, also devoted himself to painting in the later phase of his life, as evidenced by this painting from 1947. The work is characterized by its melancholic depiction of a landscape dominated by a dark grove of trees bordering a calm body of water. The atmosphere of the painting, enhanced by muted colors and expressive brush strokes, reflects Drtikol's deep feeling for the spiritual and symbolic aspects of nature. This landscape from Drtikol's late work offers a unique insight into his inner world and represents a rare example of his painting.

František Drtikol was the first to deal with the nude as an artistic concept in Czech photography. He was always boldly discovering new possibilities of depicting the female and male body, but he was not concerned with the mere depiction of real nudity. He understood the body as a motif and often supplemented it with props. Technique: bromography, paper, Signed: sign. with a stamp lower left: 66 DRTIKOL PRAGUE BROMOGRAFIA PODĚBRADY

Photographer's Bromografia and address stamp in the negative in lower left corner. - - At the beginning of the century, Frantisek Drtikol was part of the international pictorialist movement. During this period, he created a number of photographs using very elaborate techniques and pigment processes. He often combined female nudes in expressive gestures and movements with dramatic lighting. With this image, Drtikol succeeded in transforming the seriousness and gravity of the Memento Mori motif into a light and cheerful scene. – Light handling dents throughout, slight mirroring in edges, a few small retouched spots, small creases in lower right corner, traces of previous mounting on verso, otherwise a rich, atmospheric print in very good condition. - - Lit.: Zuzana Fortova. Est: -

Drtikol's portraits are characterized by a psychological line that winds through both photographs and paintings. He held the opinion that a photograph is not created by a good model, but that the composition must already be ready in the author's head. The artist waits for a mature idea and then promptly captures it. The blending of a brooding thoughtful face with a gloomy landscape creates a coherent whole with a touch of social reflection. František Drtikol was born in Czech fine art as a photographer. His feeling for light and nude photography made him famous in our country and around the world, but in 1935 he completely abandoned photography. He was sinking deeper and deeper into himself. “God is where we let him. Meditation and invocation led him to spiritual growth and awakening. A silenced being closed off to the world shuts down to absolute liberation and a rain of divine light swirls wildly around it. The spine of the being is a white light that shoots towards the sky. The liberated soul is one of the key themes of his artistic and personal development. It speaks of an ecstatic journey capped with wisdom. Evaluated by Stanislav Doležal Art. D. The posing girl in František Drtikol's drawing reveals his strong orientation towards the artistic act with elements of art nouveau and art deco, which was reflected in photography and later transformed into painting. Rembrandtovské kompozice žen vystupujících ze stínu ve vypjatých polohách patří k rukopisným projevům Františka Drtikola. Autorovo oblíbené období secese bylo Salome posedlé. Postava Salome se objevila v knihách, divadlech, na plakátech a její provokativní a nebezpečná ženská síla inspirovala mnoho umělců, aby ji ztvárnili. FRANTIŠEK DRTIKOL 1883 - 1961 - MOTHER EARTH

            Est: -

In 1935, František Drtikol ended his photographic activity and devoted himself mainly to painting and spiritual teachings. It was painting that helped him fully express the meaningful values he attached to light. The characters of his paintings are mostly girls as glowing ethereal beings. We cannot go to the author himself to interpret such works - he did not explain or interpret the paintings. We can only perhaps find fragments in the notes on the spiritual path, where he described human beings as a mystical wedding with the sun. According to the chosen composition, it is probably a symbolic manifestation of the archetypal image of Mother Earth. According to Stanislav Doležal, paintings with this theme can be found, for example, in the book František Drtikol - photographer, painter, mystic, Galerie Rudolfinum, Prague 1998. The work probably has a secondary format modified directly by the author. Consulted and expertly assessed by Stanislav Doležal, Art. D. Technique: oil on wood, Signed: signature verso fragmentary: FD

František Drtikol created works of art that show a special sense of aesthetics influenced by art nouveau, art deco and avant-garde. The act numbered 17 minimizes the use of shadow, the figure in a tense pose revealing a chest with a necklace, which also points to Drtikol's use of props and costumes. It is ranked among the most successful Czech nude photography classics of all time. Technique: bromography, paper, Signed: sign. lower right in the plate: Drtikol Prague

Text by Vladimir Birgus, Robert Koch Gallery, San Francisco 1997, plate 33 (dated); Anna Fárová / Manfred Heiting (eds.), Frantisek Drtikol. Photograph des Art Deco, Munich 1986, p. 52. In the 1920s, Drtikol became internationally known for his fascinating Art Deco nude photographs, characterised by geometric elements, expressive-dynamic poses and dramatic light staging. His independent formal language is inspired by Futurism, Expressionism and Cubism, yet always conveys a lyrical mood. His early publications and surviving vintage prints prove that he printed his carefully arranged nude compositions in both orientations, i.e. he also developed his negatives laterally reversed. This is another reason why his original glass negatives, which show the original orientation at the time of exposure, are valuable collector's items. The origin of the present negative in the 1920s has been conservationally examined and is recognisable by characteristics of the retouching as well as the glass.
