It's the poster that symbolized Johnny Weissmuller's swimming. And it's the Olympics that first used the motto Citius, Altius, Fortius (Higher, Faster, Stronger). "The espousal of mass physical culture became a source of national pride and strength, as perfectly exemplified in Jean Droit’s image” (Olympic Posters, p. 35). This was one of two posters selected out of 150 entries; it's become one of the world's most cherished items of Olympic memorabilia, and it’s all the more relevant with the centennial of the 2024 Summer Olympics taking place in Paris. Condition B+ / B: slight discoloration and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; creases, restoration and repaired tears in image. Droit was a painter and illustrator who designed several posters for France during World War I and several travel posters in the years between the wars. He is best known for his poster designed for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. He created two posters for Britain's LNER, each with wonderfully gleeful, long-limbed, graceful and rosy-cheeked vacationers. rare. We could find only two copies at auction since 1988. Furness vol. 8, p. 60.
