                Property from a Bluffton, SC Private Collection Description: Werner Drewes (American, 1899-1985), Halloween, Woodcut, 1981, pencil signed, dated 81 and numbered 11/XX, with COA and receipt from Associated American Artists, matted and framed. Frame size: 22 1/4 in. x 17 1/8 in. Werner Drewes was born in Canig, Germany. He attended the Stuttgart School of Architecture in 1920 but quickly transferred to the Stuttgart School of Arts and Crafts. After being drafted and serving in the war, Drewes studied at the Bauhaus from 1921 to 1922 with Paul Klee, Wasiliy Kandinsky and many other notable artists. He immigrated to New York City in 1930 and helped found the American Abstract Artists group the following year. He also produced two series of woodcut prints, Manhattan and It CanÕt Happen Here in the early 1930s that are considered some of the earliest abstract prints issued in the United States. He continued to study printmaking at Stanley William HayterÕs Atelier 17 in 1944 where he met Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, and others. Drewes taught at several American institutions including the Brooklyn Museum with the WPA Federal Art Project, Columbia University, Brooklyn College, and Washington University in St. Louis. Drewes continued to teach and produce new artworks until his passing in Virginia in 1985. His work is included in many major institutions across the United States. In characterising the landscape, Drewes uses bright colours that seem to unite the totality of the colour impressions he was able to gather in the Central American country. Werner Drewes studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the 1920s under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger and László Moholy-Nagy, among others. He travelled in Europe, North America and Asia. In 1930 Drewes left Germany and went to New York City, where he taught at Columbia University, among other places.
