Andrzej Dragan Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1978 -

Andrzej Dragan (born in 1978 in Konin, Poland).Polish photographer known for his portraits with a very marked style. He is also a physicist specialised in a quantum physics. Dragan's style is characterized by a raw realism, precision of the details and the crystalline clarity of the colors. However, this realism innovates by its search for an "effect" close to painting, and more precisely to the art of Dutch painters.

Thanks to his mastery of staging, color processing and local contrast management, Andrzej Dragan achieves a chiaroscuro effect ("Dragan's effect") that rejects superfluous details in the shadows, and thus gives his portraits almost a mystical dimension.

ANDRZEJ DRAGAN (Poland, 1978). Untitled, 2006. Digital photography. Edition of 7. Size: 90 x 80 cm; 114 X 84 cm (frame). Andrzej Dragan is a famous Polish photographer, specialised in portraits, who has managed to create a school with his peculiar style. He perfectly integrates photography with an original digital treatment and with an amazing dramatic effect. He has created a school and many variants of his style can be found, becoming known as the "Dragan effect" or "Draganised effect". With a haunting style he is strongly influenced by the surreal, dreamlike and thematic quality of David Lynch's films. Dragan, who began making art in 2003, is credited with the creation and proliferation of the "Dragan Effect", a post-production technique that extracts fine details, such as pores and wrinkles, to create a hyper-realistic, almost three-dimensional appearance and skew the viewer's perception of faces and reality.
