        Sir Charles D'Oyly (British 1781- 1845) Raasay House, 1825, oil on canvas. Signed, dated and titled verso. Housed in an original period gilt wood frame. Note: Sir Charles D'Oyly, 7th Baronet, was a British public official and painter from Dacca (now Dhaka). He was a member of the Bengal Civil Service based in Calcutta, Dacca and Patna from 1797 to 1838. Although he held senior positions with the East India Company's civil service, he is best known as an amateur artist who published many books featuring engravings and lithographs featuring Indian subject matter.

Contemporary straight-grain morocco, rebacked with original spine laid down. wide gilt and blind decorated border on covers, spine gilt in 6 compartments, all edges gilt. Rubbed, one text leaf repaired, a few smudges. Provenance: John Morrice (bookplate); Hermann Marx of Cobham, Surrey (bookplate). D'Oyly was a civil servant in the East India Company who published a series of works with his lithographs of the region and its people. The plates in this work are identical to those in The European in India, which was published by Orme in 1813 (Abbey 435). The plates here are watermarked 1821 to 1824. A collection of 25 hand-colored lithographic plates from D'Oyly's Views of Calcutta and Its Environs, 2 containing 2 images each, most 680 x 490 mm, with some trimmed to smaller sizes, with the panoramic view of the 'Procession of the Churruckpooja' trimmed to 894 x 424, matted and mounted on card, the title lettering cut out and inserted in matte. Some light foxing throughout, several plates with heavier marginal foxing, where previously matted, damp stain to lower margin of 'View in the Serampore Road.' A COMPLETE SERIES OF D'OYLY'S VIEWS OF CALCUTTA, with the 27 images on 25 plates, and including the panoramic plate, but without the title sheet. Abbey Travel 497; Tooley 187.         SIR CHARLES D'OYLY (1781-1845) A LAKESIDE SCENE IN INDIA watercolour 15.0 x 18.0cm / 6 x 7in Provenance: The D'Oyly Family Eyre & Hobhouse Sir Charles D'Oyly, 7th Baronet, travelled to Bangladesh (then India) in 1797 as a Civil Servant. In 1808 he was made Collector of Dakha, becoming City Collector of Customs in Kolkata in 1818. Sir Charles retired in 1838 to Italy where he spent the remainder of his life. During his time in India he was a prolific painter, and his pictures of the Mughal Ruins of Dakha were published in a folio of engravings by Sir Edwin Landseer in 1814. George Chinnery spent a long period with D'Oyly during his early career. The pair became close friends while travelling together and Chinnery had a great deal of influence on D'Oyly's style. Dickinson & Co. published D'Oyly's drawings of Views of Calcutta and its Environs in 1848, later publishing a complete edition after D'Oyly's death in 1845.

Major-General Sir Charles Walters D'Oyly, 9th Baronet (1822–1900) entered the Bengal Army and served as Aide-de-Camp to the Governor-General from 1851 to 1856; he served in the Gwalior Campaign and the Indian Mutiny before retiring in 1875. He married twice; firstly to Emily Jane Nott, daughter of Major-General George Nott; secondly to Elinor Scott, daughter of James Winter Scott.

(1781-1845), 'Figures Outside a Temple, the Plains Beyond', Inscribed within the mount 'Sir Charles Walters D'Oyly, Bart', (1822-1900), together with the title, pencil and watercolour,, 28 x 42.5cm,**The present work formed part of a large collection which were all part of a portfolio belonging to the vendors husband, having been purchased from a collector many years ago. The D'Oyly family were taking lessons from George Chinnery in the early 1800's, his second wife, Elizabeth Jane, Lady, nee Ross, (d.1875) was also a pupil of Chinnery, there was also a, Lady Mary D'Oyly, nee Fendall (1794-1886) who also painted Indian scenes and landscapes.

Dove for Edward Orme, 1813 [one plate watermarked 1811]. 4° (272 x 211mm). 20 hand-coloured aquatint plates, each with an engraved border, these highlighted in wash, with half-title. (Very occasional hint of spotting.) Contemporary straight-grain morocco, boards with double blind-stamped anthemion borders enclosing a gilt scroll of vine leaves and gilt triple rule, spine richly gilt in compartments, one of these plain but lettered in gilt, all edges gilt (joints and corners lightly rubbed). Provenance: Julia A. Ashwell, signature to upper margin of title-page, Calcutta book agency stamp to rear paste-down, Lancaster bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. FIRST EDITION of an unusual and charming work in which Europeans are shown in juxtaposition with their Indian servants and entertainers. The artist was a talented amateur whose work came under the influence of his friend George Chinnery, whilst the publisher 'Edward Orme was, after Rudolph Ackermann, the most important publisher of illustrated books during the short golden age of the coloured aquatint' (ODNB).
