  • Robert Hawker Dowling, British/Australian 1827-1886, Portrait of Captain James Wilkie, oil on canvas, 29.5 x 24cm
    May. 16, 2024

Robert Hawker Dowling, British/Australian 1827-1886, Portrait of Captain James Wilkie, oil on canvas, 29.5 x 24cm

    Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Robert Hawker Dowling British/Australian, 1827-1886 Portrait of Captain James Wilkie oil on canvas Provenance: Private Collection Melbourne. We are grateful to John Jones for his opinion on this work: "I take it that this is a Captain James Wilkie (1813 - 1874) who married Margaret Gorrige in 1847. Without viewing the work first hand it has the all the hallmarks of Dowling's portrait work in Hobart and Launceston between c1850 and 1854 (when he left Tasmania for Victoria) with the qualification that these often quite small portraits can be confused with those of his contemporary, the convict painter Knud Bull. The latter was very active in Hobart between 1847 to 1855 and there are portraits in Narryna House Museum that fall into this category. If this portrait dates from the late 1840s ( perhaps from the time of his marriage) I would consider him a possible author. Over all, Dowling's portraits from the early 1850s have a warmth about them lacking Bull's more wooden images. The frame looks original and is either by the Hobart framers William Cawston or Robin Hood. The late David Hansen also kindly viewed this work for us before his sad and recent passing and concurred that in his opinion it is the work of Robert Dowling.
