Dimensions are: paper size - 8.5 inches wide X 11 inches tall; 21.5 cm wide X 27.9 cm tall, framed – 16 inches tall X 13.5 inches wide; 40.64 cm tall X 34.3 cm wide. All measurements are approximate. Artist Biography: Laura Glenn Douglas (1896 - 1962) was an artist from Winnsboro, South Carolina who was known for her murals and depictions of African Americans. She studied at the Corcoran School of Art and Design in Washington, DC and taught at the Phillips Collection. She was praised by many well-known artists of her time, including Hans Hoffman, Fernand Léger, Alfred Stieglitz, and Georgia O'Keeffe. Douglas had a solo exhibition, "Paintings by Laura Douglas," May 14-30 in 1944 at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. where she was also a teacher. In 1942 she was commissioned to paint a mural in the US Post Office in Camilla, Georgia, entitled Theme of the South. The mural was funded by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, a program created under President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal to provide work to artists and embellish public buildings. The program was similar to the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
