In 1893 gold and silver veins were discovered and there was considerable activity up until 1903 - almost half a million dollars worth of ore was extracted. c.1956 Douglas 348cc Dragonfly Frame no. 2238/6 Engine no. 2238/6

    Est: £800 - £1,200

Bristol-based Douglas Ltd. entered the market post-war with an evolving range of 350cc flat-twins of, to put it kindly, individual design, for which there were too few customers. Fortunately, the company had made agreements with Piaggio to assemble the hugely successful Vespa scooter and this enabled Douglas to introduce their final design, the ‘Dragonfly’ in 1954. The model’s greatly improved appearance owed much to the faired, nacelle-styled headlamp and effective tidying of the frame, the whole blending well with the ‘Earles’ front forks. The machine should have been a great success. Unfortunately, the ‘Dragonfly’ also sold slowly with production of fewer than two thousand units. DFC 262R is seemingly in good condition, having, it seems, been fully restored in the 1980s. The paintwork is good and the engine turns over smoothly, the whole, apparently, needing only careful re-commissioning. The V5 notes that the Dragonfly has been ‘rebuilt’ and there should, therefore, be the possibility of obtaining a more appropriate number.

  • c.1951 Douglas 348cc MkV

    c.1951 Douglas 348cc MkV

    Est: £1,000 - £1,500

‘The popular model in the specialist range of 350cc machines, the Mark ‘V’ represents one of the most highly developed models in the Industry and has no rival for the motor-cyclist who needs efficiency, comfort, reliability and prefect road-holding.’ – Douglas (Sales & Service) Ltd. Douglas’s one-model range was improved by legendary racer/designer Freddie Dixon for 1948, re-emerging in revised form as the ‘MkIII’. The latter featured new cylinder heads and a stronger frame, while 1950 saw the introduction of the interim MkIV model with its distinctive triangular toolboxes, frame-mounted pillion footrests and un-sprung front mudguard. The arrival of the 80 Plus and 90 Plus sports roadsters led to the preceding ‘standard’ and ‘sports’ distinctions being dropped, the ‘standard’ roadster becoming the ‘MkV’ in November 1950. Production ceased with the Dragonfly’s introduction for 1955. The vendor advises us that this MkV benefits from an reconditioned magneto. The kick-start however, is broken and needs attention, and as a result it has not been possible to re-time the ignition. Restored approximately ten years ago and sold strictly as viewed, the machine is offered with old-style logbook and Swansea V5 registration document.
