  • Doughty - Great Horned Owl. 2
    Feb. 03, 2024

Doughty - Great Horned Owl. 2

    Est: $100 - $200

This originally hand-colored lithograph is from John & Thomas Doughty's The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports. The work was published in Philadelphia by the authors between 1830 and 1834. This work featured the first series of color sporting prints published in America. (Bennett) Thomas Doughty was large responsible for the art work and was "hailed as 'the all-American Claude Lorrain.'" (Howat, The Hudson River and its Painters, p.31) The work was "an amalgam of natural history, sporting accounts, travel narratives, and practical advice for the countryman." (Reese) The Cabinet was very successful in its first eight issues and brought the art and practice of lithography to a wider audience. "1830 crucial in the history of American lithography for the lithographic print came of age, and this was largely through the work of Thomas Doughty” (Looney) This work "marks the beginning of dominance of lithography in book illustration." (Reese)

Thomas Doughty (American, 1793-1856) "Sketch of a Small Settlement Nestled in the Mountains" oil on canvas signed en verso, dated and further inscribed with provenance en verso. Framed and with artist plaque. 12" x 16", framed 20-1/4" x 24-1/4" Provenance: By repute, presented to Dr. Henry F. Quackenbos (1820-1888) following the death of Doughty, New York, New York; J. Hedden, 1865+; thence by descent. Notes: Born into a Philadelphia family and apprenticed at a young age to a leather smith, Thomas Doughty was largely self-taught, debuting as a landscape painter in 1816 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. An early pioneer in the American landscape tradition, Doughty adapted the English style he learned through copying paintings in the collection of his Baltimore patron, Robert Gilmor, Jr., into a distinctly American genre - the conservative and subdued palette, and masses of indistinguishable foliage characteristic of English landscapes were transformed under Doughty into contemplative vignettes drawn from outdoor sketches of New England rivers and mountains. The study of nature created a comparative realism unique to the American experience that revitalized interest in the landscape painting and laid the foundation for the Hudson River School's epic canvases drawn from light and infused with Romantic grandeur. This fine sketch, believed to be the last work by the artist, freely executed with somber clouds and sable grounds, belies the sublime skies to come.

  • Thomas Doughty (American, 1793-1856) Two Fishermen, 1828 Oil on canvas 17 x 24 i
    Nov. 01, 2019

    Thomas Doughty (American, 1793-1856) Two Fishermen, 1828 Oil on canvas 17 x 24 i

    Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Thomas Doughty (American, 1793-1856) Two Fishermen, 1828 Oil on canvas 17 x 24 inches (43.2 x 61.0 cm) Signed and dated lower left: T. Doughty 1828 PROPERTY OF A DISTINGUISHED PRIVATE COLLECTOR, ALPHARETTA, GEORGIA PROVENANCE: Private collection, Georgia; [With]Johnson Hall Fine Art, Roswell, Georgia; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Two Fishermen is a fine example of the artist's early period of the 1820s — arguably his best period. During this decade, Doughty's work transitioned from the purer topographical scenery, with nature rendered in detail, to more fanciful, imaginary scenery done in a looser hand. Two Fishermen is in the earlier, topographical tradition, but includes elements of future interests. By the early 1830s, Doughty had moved almost entirely away from these sorts of pure landscapes painted in great detail. A copy of a letter from scholar Frank H. Goodyear, Jr., discussing the present work and dated August 2, 2005, accompanies this lot. HID01801242017
