Doughty (C. L., 1913-1985). Preparation for a Medieval Joust, 1949, watercolour, heightened with bodycolour, on artist's board, of a bright and colourful pageant scene, with knights on horseback, flagged tents, and jousting arena, etc., signed and dated, 270 x 320 mm (10.5 x 12.5 ins), together with General Wolfe at Quebec, grisaille watercolour, heightened with bodycolour, on artist's board, showing Wolfe standing on a rock with his sword drawn, soldiers and naval vessels below, signed, 440 x 275 mm (17.25 x 10.75 ins) Cecil Langley Doughty was an illustrator who worked on a number of comics, such as Thriller Comic, Starflash, Challenger, Top Spot, and School Friend. His debonair style was ideal for the swashbuckling costume/action strip, as this vibrant joust scene testifies. From an early age Doughty admired the work of Charles Brock and Hugh Thomson, and their influence is evident in his work. (2)
