    Josef Douba was one of the genre painters, he traveled extensively, but he was most famous for paintings from the Czech environment. He recorded the seen reality with the accuracy of a painter's reporter and without striving for unnecessary effects. He often painted in the environment of Domažlice. He is the author of frescoes in the Hradec Králové library, historical paintings, and later paintings from the life of the rural people, mostly from Chodsko, and portraits. In the years 1893-1896 he participated in the exhibitions of Umělecká beseda. He contributed extensively to Golden Prague. He illustrated the edition of Babička by Božena Němcová from 1898.     GOODBYE Oil on canvas, 55,5x36,5 cm, signed lower right "Jos. Douba". Framed. LOUČENÍ Olej na plátně, 55,5x36,5 cm, signováno vpravo dole "Jos. Douba". Rámováno. Stav B. V letech 1881–1891 studoval na pražské akademii u F. Sequense a M. Pirnera, zde se spřátelil s L. Maroldem. Uskutečnil studijní cesty do Německa, kde jej zásadně ovlivnilo především mnichovské školení, a do Itálie. Zpočátku působil v Praze, zanedlouho přesídlil do Českých Budějovic a od roku 1919 se usadil v Domažlicích. Vytvořil fresky v královéhradecké knihovně, maloval historické obrazy, později také venkovské výjevy, především z Chodska, a portréty. V letech 1893-1896 se účastnil výstav Umělecké besedy. Přispíval ilustracemi do Zlaté Prahy, dále ilustroval např. Babičku B. Němcové (vydáno v roce 1898). ABSCHIED Öl auf Leinwand, 55,5x36,5 cm, signiert rechts unten "Jos. Douba". Gerahmt.
