    CÉCILE DOUARD (1866-1941) "Ramasseuse d'escarbilles". Plaster. Exhibitions: "European sculpture in the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014. Size: 70 x 39 x 27 cm. Despite her French origin, she spent her youth in Mons and a large part of her life in Wallonia and Brussels. A disciple and companion of the painter Antoine Bourlard, he painted social themes following his discovery of the Borinage mines, in a style indebted to Meunier. In 1898, at the age of 33, she went blind and had to give up painting and devote herself to painting, music and sculpture to fight "against black ideas", as she herself said. This is where "La recogedora de carboniza" should be placed, a good example of her little known This is where "The Charcoal Gatherer", a good example of her little-known facet as a sculptor, and in which her interest in depicting the situation of working women can be appreciated, with references to Daumier and Steinlen. In 1904 she left Mons and moved to Brussels, where she wrote her autobiography. It is also interesting to note that in 1922 she interesting to note that in 1922 she created the Braille League, of which she was president from 1926 to 1937.
