[CINA] - DORN, Frank (1901-1981) - A Map and History of Peiping with explanatory booklet. Tianjin, Beijing: Peiyang Press Ltd, 1936. A curious map of the city of Beijing full of humorous cartoons that visually describe the peculiarities and attractions of each area, from the forbidden city to the ancient execution square passing through the eunuchs cemetery. The actual map is surrounded by a frame with a cartoonist representation of Chinese history from 1100 BC. to 1927, the year in which the capital was transferred to Nanjing, and the representation of a funeral and wedding procession. . Mappa (870 x 760mm). Booklet (180 x 135mm). Map printed in colour and folded; preserved in a accompanying pamphlet, 22 pages in original wrappers backed in cloth, all within the cardboard editorial case (editorial case worn, map case with some wear). Deliziosa mappa della cittÃ di Pechino ricca di vignette di gusto umoristico che descrivono visivamente le particolaritÃ e le attrazioni di ogni zona, dalla cittÃ proibitÃ all'antica piazza delle esecuzioni passando per il cimitero degli eunuchi. La mappa vera e propria Ã¨ circondata da una cornice con una rappresentazione vignettistica della storia cinese dal 1100 a.C. al 1927, anno in cui la capitala fu trasferita a Nanchino, e dalla rappresentazione di un corteo funerario e di matrimonio. Mappa (870 x 760mm). Libretto (180 x 135mm). Mappa stampata a colori ripiegata contenuta in una custodia dentro al pamphlet di accompagnamento, 22 pagine in brossura editoriale con dorso in tela, il tutto entro cofanetto editoriale in cartone stampato (difetti e mancanze al cofanetto, custodia della mappa con qualche difetto).

Illustrierte Original-Kartonage mit Kartentasche im hinteren Umschlag (Rücken mit Leinenstreifen verstärkt, brüchig, zahlreiche kleine Einrisse und kleine Randfehlstellen, Kartentasche beschädigt). Kurz nach der ersten Ausgabe herausgegebener 2. Druck (erkennbar durch die Hakenkreuzfahne am deutschen Gesandtschaftsquartier). - Der humorvoll gestaltete Plan (86,5 x 75 cm) zeigt bekannte Gebäude mit reicher Figurenstaffage in Alltagsszenen. - Der amerikanische Offizier Frank Dorn (1901-1981) war als Beobachter der japanischen Expansionspolitik in Peking stationiert. - Die mehrfach gefaltete Karte mit einigen Einrissen in den Falzen und etwas knickspurig, erste und letzte Seite der Broschüre papierbedingt gebräunt.

Grande lithographie rehaussée / colorisée donnant à voir une carte de Péking / Pékin (840 x 740 mm). Elle figurait à l'origine dans un ouvrage de poche traitant de l'histoire de la ville et au sein duquel elle était pliée (ledit ouvrage est ici lacunaire / entoilée, pliures). Frank Dorn, (American, 1901-1981), illustrated map of Peiping/Peking/Beijing, published in Tientsin-Peiping by Peiyang Press, 1935. A fine example of the iconic map from the well-known illustrator, Frank 'Pinky' Dorn, who was an aide to General Stilwell, commander of the US and Nationalist Chinese resistance against Japan in China and Burma. The map outlines Beijing within the old city walls, and surrounded by vignettes depicting episodes in Chinese history. Description cartouche reads 'A Map and History of Peiping; formerly known as Peking, capital of provinces, princedoms, and kingdoms since 1121 B.C.; in 1264 A.D. the capital of the Mongol Empire of Kublai Khan; made the capital of the Ming Empire and built as it is today by Yung Lo in 1421; continued as the capital of the Chinese Empire through the Ming and Ching Dynasties; and now a city which will live long in the memory of man as one of the greatest the world has ever known. Completed on this fifth day of February in the year of our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-Six.' A San Francisco native, Frank Dorn attended West Point and received a commission in the Field Artillery. Practically his entire service career was in the far east, from Beijing to Burma, until he retired in 1953 and returned to San Francisco where he lived until his death in 1981. A remarkable example, professionally dry mounted on board and in a bamboo style frame. Measures 34 x 30 inches overall.
