    • Rudolph & Kallmus Photo Cards of Mary Wigman (1920s)
      Sep. 08, 2022

Rudolph & Kallmus Photo Cards of Mary Wigman (1920s)

      Est: $800 - $1,200

Charlotte Rudolph (German, 1896-1983). "Visionen: Raumgestalt Mary Wigman" gelatin silver print on postcard stock, 1928 - with "CH. RUDOLPH DRESDEN" stamped on lower right AND Dora Philippine Kallmus (Austrian, 1881-1963). Mary Wigman, from "Geschlossene Tanzzyklen" - also printed on postcard stock, Vienna, 1923-1924. A magnificent pair of photographic images capturing the style and grace of avant-garde German dancer Mary Wigman in the 1920s - one by Charlotte Rudolph and the other by Dora Philippine Kallmus (aka Madame D'Ora). Rudolph's dramatic image captured Wigman gracefully arching her body, raising her arms in the air as she swings a silk or satin scarf in a swooping motion that visually echoes the dancer's form. Madame D'Ora's image presents Wigman gesticulating with her elegant hands while surrounded by three other beautiful dancers. Size (Rudolph): 5.3" L x 3.375" W (13.5 cm x 8.6 cm) Size (D'Ora): 3.25" L x 4.125" W (8.3 cm x 10.5 cm) Mary Wigman is considered a pioneer of modern expressive dance. A student of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze and Rudolf Laban, she went on to create her own avant-garde style, oftentimes dancing solely with percussion or no music at all! Charlotte Rudolph created eye-catching photographs of avant-garde German dancers during the 1920s and 1930s. Many regard her photographs as some of the most significant documents concerning expressive dance. Rudolph was known for capturing dancers in the act of dancing rather than in a staged pose. Her 1924 images of Gret Palucca's impressive leaps fueled Palucca's fame and also led to Rudolph's great success - dancers flocked to her studio hoping Rudolph would be able to similarly capture their movements. Dora Philippine Kallmus (also known as Madame D'Ora or Madame d'Ora) was a famous Austrian portrait and fashion photographer. Kallmus' interest in photography began when she was an assistant to the son of the artist Hans Makart. She was the first woman admitted to theory courses at the Graphische Lehr-und Versuchsanstalt (Graphic Training Institute) in 1905 and also became a member of the Association of Austrian photographers that same year. Kallmus established her own studio with Arthur Benda in Vienna in 1907. It was called the Atelier d'Ora or Madame D'Ora-Denda - a name derived from her pseudonym "Madame d'Ora". They also ran a summer studio from 1921 to 1926 in Karlsbad, Germany and opened a gallery in Paris, France in 1925. Kallmus photographed famous celebrities such as Coco Chanel, Josephine Baker, Maurice Chevalier, Tamara de Lempicka, Alban Berg, and Colette in addition to renowned dancers, writers, and artists. These photographs were in the collection of pioneering patron of the arts, Ginny Williams. Sotheby's hosted a series of auctions featuring art and photography in the Ginny Williams Collection in June and July of 2020. Their press release began as follows, "Born in rural Virginia in 1927, Ginny moved to Denver, Colorado in the late 1950s with her husband, Carl Williams. An avid photographer herself, who studied with Austrian-American photojournalist and photographer Ernst Haas, her collecting journey began with classical figurative photography. Her passion and keen eye eventually prompted her to open her namesake gallery in Denver in the 1980s. While her passion for photography never waned, remaining a primary focus of both her gallery and private collection, her voracious curiosity quickly widened her curatorial focus. Over time, Ginny became increasingly courageous and experimental in her selections, venturing into Abstract Expressionism and Contemporary Art and following her artists themselves through gallery shows and museum exhibitions. As the years passed, Ginny became as much of a trailblazer as the artists she collected."
