Incisione in rame in coloritura. mm 490x588. Foglio: mm 535x620. Carta numero XXIII dell'Atlas coelestis, quarta delle sei che nell'insieme riproducono l'intera volta stellata: quadrata di 43,4 centimetri di lato, rappresenta le costellazioni contenute nella fascia celeste intorno all'equinozio autunnale tra i 135° e i 225° di ascensione retta e i +45° e i -45° di declinazione. Le stelle, suddivise in classi graduate di sei magnitudini, sono posizionate calcolando la precessione degli equinozi per l'anno 1730, e vengono identificate da lettere dell'alfabeto latino, la successione ricomincia per ogni costellazione e corrisponde all'elenco posizionato a destra e sinistra della carta dove, per ogni stella, troviamo le coordinate in latitudine e longitudine, la magnitudine e la descrizione della posizione anatomica nel personaggio mitologico. Oltre alle costellazioni tolemaiche ne vengono descritte altre non tolemaiche: Coma Berenices, Canes Venatici, Asterion et Chara, Mons Maenalus, Leo Minor, Sextans Uranie, Lynx. Inoltre nella carta è tracciato il percorso delle comete, quella di Halley e di altre osservate ad esempio da Johannes Hevelius e Gian Domenico Cassini. (1)

Come riportato in alto rappresenta, secondo le regole dell'aritmetica e della geometria, le stelle fisse in chiusura dell'anno del Signore 1730. Prima, con numerazione XX, di sei tavole dedicate all'illustrazione di tutta la volta celeste e la ventiquattresima delle trenta carte che formano nell'insieme l'Atlas Coelestis che Doppelmayr, matematico all'Aegidien Gymnasium di Norimberga, redasse intorno al 1720 per conto dell'officina tipografica fondata in città nel 1702 dal cartografo Johann Baptist Homann. Vista interna dell'emisfero Nord incentrata sul polo equatoriale. La mappa riporta la proiezione delle costellazioni con i loro nomi: Cammello Opardalus, Cassiopea, Draco, Ercole, Cefeo, Lacerta S. Stellio, Orsa Maggiore, Orsa Minore, Lince, Auriga, Perseo, Leone Minore, Cigno. Nelle due ampie legende ai lati riunisce le coordinate celesti degli Zodiaci. Troviamo indicato anche il percorso delle comete. (1)

Letterpress title-page printed in red and black. Engraved allegorical additional title-page (plain), and 30 double-page engraved celestial charts and diagrams, some incorporating miniature world maps or spandrel illustrations of astronomical observatories, in contemporary hand color and wash (damp-stained at foot and head of most leaves, causing the wash to run in many cases, last few maps stained and discolored, map 15 with some abrasion). Nineteenth-century English Russia gilt, (rebacked in pale calf gilt with Pease family crests by James Brockman, a reimboitage). Provenance: Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, Lord Wardington (1924-2005), Library of Important Atlases and Geographies, his sale Sotheby's' 10th October 2006, 142. First and only edition. Doppelmayr, an acclaimed astronomer, was born in Nuremberg in 1671. He was a member of the Royal Society of London and the Academies of Berlin, Vienna and St. Petersburg. He visited astronomers in many countries, and hence in addition to the star charts and selenographic map, the atlas includes "diagrams illustrating the planetary systems of Copernicus, Tycho, and Riccioli; the ecliptic theories of Kepler, Boulliau, Seth Ward and Mercator; the lunar theories of Tycho, Horrocks and Newton, and Halley's cometary theory" (DSB). From the distinguished library of Lord Wardington whose collection of Atlases was unique: "a panoply of the history of cartography and of great mapmakers" (Andrew Phillips "An Appreciation", Sotheby's sale catalogue).

Decorativa carta celeste che mostra i movimenti irregolari di Terra, Mercurio e Venere secondo il modello copernicano, nel corso dell'anno 1710. Lungo i bordi sinistro e destro del foglio, carte lineari raffigurano il transito di Mercurio davanti al Sole il 5 novembre 1710 e il (previsto) transito di Venere davanti al Sole il 6 giugno 1761. Al centro una mappa circolare del sistema solare con linee che si irradiano per mappare le posizioni di Venere e Mercurio durante l'orbita in date particolari dell'anno 1710. All'interno della mappa si osserva un'elaborata scena allegorica con i pianeti in orbita attorno al sole, e la Terra che attraversa i cieli su un carro, la cui ruota è una piccola mappa del Polo Sud. Questa tavola fu pubblicata per la prima volta nell'Atlas von Hundert Charten di Homann (1712) e ristampata per il suo Grossen Atlas (1716) e infine per l'Atlas Coelestis nel 1742.
