The following data is from Gayla Miles, niece of the artist. She wrote: "I am supplying this information regarding my uncle James W. Duke, who painted under the name of Jim Dooley. He painted western scenes during the 1960's and the 1970's."

Jim Dooley was a self-taught artist who painted primarily southwestern and Texas hill country scenes. He was also known for his depictions of Texas bluebonnets. He was originally from Hope, Arkansas and moved to Austin, Texas when he was a young child. He died in a car accident at the age of 38.
