Koenraads, ‘De Gebroeders Jacob en Willem Dooijewaard’, 1966, ill. p. 126., Willem Dooyewaard travelled far and wide. Before the war, he visited countries in the Far East, including the Dutch East Indies, Japan and China. After the end of WWII, he went on one more long-term trip to satisfy his desire for exotic impressions, this time to Morocco.Over a one-and-a-half-year period between 1948 and 1949, he painted the proud people in wide flapping and colourful clothes, narrow streets teeming with people. Dooijewaard experienced the predominantly nomadic population as friendly and hospitable, but unapproachable in their sense of freedom that tolerated no interference in their actions, morals or customs. The men and children gladly posed for him, but the women... they remained invisible and he only got to see them heavily veiled. However, he wanted to paint them naturally, without the protective clothing. Through the mediation of a Moorish woman and under elaborate precautions, he managed to paint some models nude or semi-nude. This was not allowed to become known, because if a Moroccan woman had posed nude for him, she was no longer sure of her life among her people!'This is how Willem painted his oriental women and harem girls and perhaps under the tension of the forbidden, they became paintings which may be counted among his finest works because of their charged and sensitive expressiveness. However, they were 'forbidden paintings' and only under a promise never to exhibit them in Morocco was he allowed to export them out of the country on his departure. He worked in Morocco for over a year, from 1948 to 1949 after which he settled in Blaricum. His thirst for space and adventure was now satisfied. Source:Jan P. Dooijewaard' (lower right); annotated 'No. 12 Peking Chineesche muur' (written on the stretcher). , oil on canvas, 49x59,5 cm, , Provenance:-Private Collection, the Netherlands, for at least 65 years, Painted most likely between 1923 and 1926.Beijing Southeast Corner Watch Tower or Dongnan Jiaolou aka DongbianmenThe Beijing city fortifications were series of walls with towers and gates constructed in the city of Beijing, China in the early 1400s until they were partially demolished in 1965 for the construction of the 2nd Ring Road and a new line of the Beijing Subway. The original walls were preserved in the southeastern part of the city, just south of the Beijing Railway Station. The entire perimeter of the Inner and Outer city walls stretched for approximately 60 kilometres.Beijing was the capital of China for the majority of the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as a secondary capital to the Liao and Jin dynasties. As such, the city required an extensive fortification system around The Forbidden City, the Imperial City, the Inner city, and the Outer city. Fortifications included gate towers , archways, watchtowers, barbicans, barbican towers, barbican gates, barbican archways, sluice gates, sluice gate towers, enemy sighting towers, corner guard towers and a moat system. It had the most extensive defense system in Imperial China.After the collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1911, Beijing's fortifications were gradually dismantled. The Forbidden City has remained largely intact, and has become the Palace Museum. Some fortifications remain intact, including Tiananmen, the gate tower and watchtower at Zhengyangmen, the watchtower at Deshengmen, the southeastern corner watch tower, and a section of the Inner city wall near Chongwenmen. The latter two components now form the Ming City Wall Relics Park. None of the Outer city remains intact. After a short break in the Netherlands he made his first visit to Bali in 1920 where he met Roland Strasser who was to become his fellow travelling artist. Together they visited China and travelled via Beijing to Inner-Mongolia in 1923. After a short return to the Netherlands Dooijewaard embarked for India in 1925, again with Strasser, and from there arrived in Tibet in May 1925. Then they travelled from Calcutta by boat to Shanghai, by train to Beijing and to Mongolia, to Urga (now Ulan Bator) where they stayed for two years. After Tibet, Dooijewaard travelled to Bali. Afterwards, he moved to Japan in 1931 for about a year where he married Jacoba Frederike Reinders in Kobe. The newlyweds went back to Bali for three happy years. In late 1933 Willem went home to live in Blaricum. He stayed there till after WWII when he and his wife went to stay in Morocco from 1948 to 1949. Dooijewaard experienced the predominantly nomadic population as friendly and hospitable, but unapproachable in their sense of freedom that tolerated no interference in their actions, morals, or customs. The men and children gladly posed for him, but the women remained invisible, and he could only get to see them heavily veiled. However, he wanted to paint them naturally, without the protective clothing. Through the mediation of a Moorish woman and under elaborate precautions, he managed to paint a number of models naked or semi-nude. This was absolutely forbidden because if it became known that a Moroccan had posed nude in front of him, she would no longer be sure of her life amongst her people! William painted his oriental women and harem girls in this way and perhaps due to and because of the impending tension of the forbidden, they became paintings, which by their charged and sensitive expressiveness may be counted among his finest works. However, they were 'forbidden paintings', and only under the promise never to exhibit them in Morocco was he allowed to export them out of the country on his departure. He worked in Morocco for over a year, from 1948 to 1949 after which he settled in Blaricum. His thirst for space and adventure was now quenched. Reference: Jan P.
