While employed there, he began painting in the winters and attended John Ward Dunsmore Art School. He then worked as a cartoonist-reporter for the Detroit Free Press. At the turn of the century he further studied art in London, Paris, and Ireland. Upon returning in 1904, he married the daughter of a San Bernardino rancher. Settling in Los Angeles, he was active in the local art scene. John Donovan died there on Jan. 9, 1941.
