DONGHI ANTONIO (1897 - 1963). INTERNO, (1922). signature and year. The artwork is accompanied by the archiving certificate from the Archive of the Roman - Valerio Rivosecchi. PROVENANCE Private collection, Rome "These are paintings in which the artist refines his repertoire - interiors, portraits, still lifes, Roman views - and at the same time studies composition and lighting. Some useful points of comparison, regarding the treatment of color and light, can come from paintings like La Fontana dei Cavalli Marini and Fontana di Trevi, where the transitions between shades tend to soften, yet leaving highlights of 'body' light evident, almost an extreme legacy of the nineteenth-century tradition, which will soon be definitively abandoned. The theme of the arch in perspective is addressed several times during this period, from one of the earliest known paintings depicting the Basilica of Maxentius, to 1924, with the unusual compositions of Ponte Cestio and San Bartolomeo all'Isola, while the atmosphere of the painting, with its silent description of objects, anticipates paintings like La Scala, where, however, the decisive influence of Casorati is felt much more precisely. In these early paintings, Donghi sought a new definition for traditional themes, such as views or interiors, experimenting with original solutions in composition and framing." Si tratta di quadri in cui l'artista mette a punto il suo repertorio - interni, ritratti, nature morte, vedute romane - e allo stesso tempo studia la composizione e le luci. Alcuni utili elementi di confronto, per quanto riguarda il trattamento del colore e delle luci, possono venire da dipinti come La fontana dei cavalli marini e Fontana di Trevi, dove i passaggi tra una tonalità e l'altra tendono ad ammorbidirsi lasciando tuttavia in evidenza dei risalti di luce 'a corpo', quasi un estremo retaggio della tradizione ottocentesca, che presto saranno definitivamente abbandonati. (..) l'atmosfera del dipinto, con la sua silenziosa descrizione degli oggetti, anticipa dipinti come La scala, dove tuttavia, si avverte in modo più preciso, la determinante influenza di Casorati. Donghi cercava, in questi primi dipinti, una definizione nuova per temi tradizionali, come la veduta o gli interni, sperimentano soluzioni originali sul piano compositivo e nell'inquadratura.
