      Est: $2,500 - $3,250

Striking Mezzotint of the Senate Chamber in the 1830s. Prints - Politics. Thomas Doney, United States Senate Chamber, 1848 (dated). Hand Color. This large and dramatic mezzotint depicts the Senate Chamber. It is a composite scene, based on daguerreotypes in the National Miniature Gallery of Anthony, Clark & Co., featuring figures who would have graced the chamber in the 1830s. Among the famous politicians depicted are John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, James Buchanan, Martin van Buren, James K. Polk, and a scowling John C. Calhoun. Several important figures fill the balcony overlooking the chamber, including John James Audubon, Henry Wordsworth Longfellow, and an aging Dolley Madison. The gilded wood Eagle and Shield and the magnificent chandelier overhang the scene. Published by Edward Anthony. Engraved by Thomas Doney, after a design by J. Whitehorne. Printed by Powell & Co.
