      A peasant selling eggs and other merchandise in a village street, unclear inscription (on rim of earthenware tankard), oil on panel, 42x30,5 cm, Provenance:-Private collection, Germany.-Auction, Sotheby's, London, 12 November 1969, lot 94. -Auction, Waterman, Zürich, 3 June 1978, as: ‘signed and dated’ and ‘Gutachten Dr. W. Bernt, München’. -Auction, Christie's, London, 9 July 1993, lot 164, as: ‘signed GDonck’, and ‘with a certificate by Walther Bernt’. -With M.L. Wurfbain Fine Art, Oegstgeest, by 1994, Mr Maarten Lodewijk Wurfbain was director of Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden from 1967-1988. He then founded ‘Wurfbain Fine Art’ through which he offered old Dutch masters from 1989-1999.Please compare this lot to a signed and dated painting, of the same size, by Gerard Donck with a similar subject of an elderly man selling eggs (1635), where the scene however is set indoors, illustrated in two books by Walther Bernt, ‘Die niederländischen Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts’, 1969, Vol. I, ill. no. 316, and 1979, Vol. I, ill. no. 339.

      Donck, Gerard van: Porträt eines stehenden Kavaliers Porträt eines stehenden Kavaliers mit Spitzenkragen. Öl auf Eichenholz, im Oval. 49 x 36,5 cm. Zahlreiche Porträts van Doncks, häufig Figuren in vornehmer dunkler Kleidung, befinden sich in internationalen Sammlungen, wie beispielsweise das Porträt eines jungen Mannes mit breitkrempigen Hut (Wien, Sammlung A. von Stummer-Ravornak) sowie drei Porträts in der Sammlung des Fürsten von Liechtenstein. - Dem Werk liegen vier Expertisen bei, die sämtlich die Autorschaft Gerard Doncks bestätigen: Walther Bernt vom 8. November 1967, Justus Müller Hofstede vom 16. November 1967, Georges Marlier vom 7. Mai 1968 und S. Bermans vom 17. Juli 1968. Das Gemälde wurde vom Vorbesitzer 1970 im Kunsthaus Bodan, Konstanz erworben.
