      Full length portrait of a young lady in a garden setting, wearing a white chiffon gown with a blue satin sash Oil on canvas (unlined) Signed and dated lower-left ‘HDonaldSmith [18]99’ Enclosed in an ornate contemporary gilt frame Note: Primarily a society portrait painter in oils, Helen Donald-Smith (1858-1930) also enjoyed great success with her exhibitions of watercolours, many of these being views of Venice. In 1906 she shared the exhibition space of the Modern Gallery of Bond Street with the works of William Percy French (1854-1920). She also exhibited at the Baillie Gallery in Bruton St. In 1925 she exhibited 90 watercolours at the Gieves Gallery in Old Bond St. These works consisted of views of the English countryside and of Venice. Her portraits of Sir William Grove and the Novelist Marie Corelli (1855-1924) can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Two military portraits are held by the Royal Marines Museum
